This jewel box of a Keeping Room sits just off the Kitchen and Breakfast Room we shared earlier this week—and, like the rest of the home, it was designed with our clients’ real life in mind.

Every piece of upholstered furniture features kid-friendly performance fabric, while the layout was thoughtfully planned around the family’s love of entertaining. Swivel chairs give the room incredible flexibility, allowing guests to turn toward the Frame TV hiding in plain sight or face the Kitchen while dinner is being prepared.

To bring a sense of continuity to the open floor plan, we carried the window treatment fabric onto the Breakfast Room chairs, subtly connecting the adjoining spaces.

And our favorite fun fact about this room? One we can’t take credit for. Previous homeowners who built this addition sourced the stone flooring from a castle in France—giving this warm, hardworking family room a little piece of history underfoot.

Let’s talk kid-friendly design—because practical doesn’t have to mean sacrificing style.

With two young children at home, our clients needed their kitchen and everyday dining spaces to stand up to sticky fingers, spills, and real family life. We selected counter stools upholstered in vegan leather and performance fabric for durability, easy cleanup, and a polished look.

For the chair seats, we took a slightly different approach—and it paid off. We chose a beautifully patterned fabric, Seraphine in Kiwi by Manuel Canovas, and added an ultra-low-sheen protective lamination to the seat. It’s nearly invisible, but gives the fabric an extra layer of protection where it matters most.

Even the kitchen table was selected with family life in mind, featuring a special scratch-resistant finish. The result? A space that feels elevated and beautifully designed, but is still ready for everything two little ones can throw at it.

Welcome to our first homeowner spotlight! Kelly sets a beautiful table and is an expert host, so it was only right that she styled her beautiful table when we photographed her home. We asked for her tips to setting a fun table – swipe to  keep reading to learn her secrets.

From kelly masters kirby: For me, a memorable tablescape makes a dinner party or special event feel truly meaningful. While setting the table may seem like simply arranging plates and utensils, I see it as an opportunity to create a beautiful, welcoming space that brings guests together and sparks conversation. It also shows them I’m excited they’re here and that I’ve put thought and care into making them feel special.

Where should you start?
Begin by choosing a theme or color palette, usually guided by the occasion—whether it’s a festive holiday celebration, a relaxed seasonal gathering, or a formal dinner party. If you’re hosting at home, work with your space rather than against it. Instead of choosing colors at random, pull from tones already in the room to create a cohesive, intentional design.

When should you start?
Because tablescapes often come together organically, I like to set the table a few days ahead. This gives me time to refine the design, make adjustments, and pick up any last-minute details if needed. Preparing in advance also frees up the day of the event for everything else on your to-do list.

How should you design?
Gather your pieces, start with the base layers, and adjust as the table comes together. Add depth and interest with textures like placemats, napkins, charger and dinner plates, or distinctive wine and water glasses. For a memorable finishing touch, consider using an unexpected item as a napkin ring. I prefer classic centerpieces, such as flowers, candles, or both, kept low enough so guests can see and converse across the table.

Where should you source pieces?
I’m always looking for beautiful tabletop decor. If you find something that works well in your space, buy it even if you don’t have an event planned—chances are, when you need it, it will be hard to find. Some of my favorite loca

It all started with a piece of art. While some of our clients have fabulous, extensive collections for us to draw from, others need help sourcing the perfect pieces—these clients were the former. Passionate collectors, they discovered this artwork in Florida before they had even purchased their current home. As you can see, it became the inspiration for the entire room and serves as its centerpiece.

This bedroom’s design began with the home’s existing silk drapes, which our clients inherited from the previous owners. While the original treatment felt dated with its heavy header and ornate swags, the silk itself was beautiful — and the color was too good not to keep.  

By removing the header, updating the hardware, and layering in a beautiful upholstered bed, bedding and artwork, we gave the drapes new life and created a fresh, elegant space.

A designer’s favorite kind of challenge: preserving what’s beautiful, avoiding unnecessary waste, and making it feel entirely new.

A living room so nice, we designed it twice! We started designing this home for clients who ended up selling mid-project—luckily, the buyers loved our work and brought us on to finish the job.
