I’m happy to announce I’ve completed my Pollinator Stewardship Certification from Pollinator Partnership! This is an organization I’ve advocated for in several ways over the last couple years and I decided to join their stewardship program last year. It consists of several online modules, a habitat creation challenge, and an outreach component. I installed a new pollinator garden on our property this Spring, and most of what I do is pollinator-related outreach work, so no problem there! The new pollinator garden included spring, summer, and fall nectar sources, milkw**d, and the bees’ new favorite of all my plants, this native passion-vine. All the bees attracted to the beautiful purple flowers led to TONS of passionfruit for us this year. Highly recommend this plant!

I’ll be gone for the next week at a convention for the International Butterfly Breeders Association, where I’ll also be spreading the word about Pollinator Partnership during a presentation on pollinator conservation I’ll give to the attendees. I’ll be back at Findlay Market the start of November with new merchandise and pollinator ornaments for the holidays! See you then!

New designs available in the shop!

First is the Hot Hickory Dog! Original image from .mccormac with permission, of course. Here Jim is showing the relative size of one of the largest caterpillars in the world, the Hickory Horned Devil. This is the larval form of the Regal Moth.

Our other new design is the Rainbow Pride Tiger Moth. This is a new addition to our pride moth collection. Comes as a pixie dust vinyl sticker or a pearl effect enamel pin. Perfect for anyone supportive of the LGBTQ+ and cute little moths!

All are available in the shop section of our website, on our Etsy store, or come see them in person this weekend! We’ll be at the Off Market on Saturday and Findlay Market on Sunday. Expect to see Monarchs and Lunas in the enclosure if the weather is good.

Even wild butterflies like to visit our butterflies at Findlay Market!

This is a Hackberry Emperor butterfly that I met while they were checking out our butterfly earrings. I invited them into our live butterfly enclosure to meet the Monarchs we had today. Then they got a snack and went on their way!

This is honeyvine milkw**d that I planted last year in a new native milkw**d bed I installed on the side of my house. This spot was just a four foot wide strip of grass that no one used, but now it’s a thriving little ecosystem! As you can see, it has exploded this year!

I’ve been using it to feed my first monarch cats of the summer and they seem very happy with it. It’s not a typical milkw**d to see intentionally planted as it can be like a w**d, and I have found it in places I didn’t plant it. Monarchs prefer laying eggs on my common and swamp milkw**ds. I would still recommend this milkw**d to people who have the space (vertically and horizontally).

People sometimes ask if Monarchs are going extinct. It’s a complicated question, but their populations are definitely in decline along with most insects. Planting milkw**d AND nectar sources in your yard or even in pots will help them. Keep it safe for them by not using pesticides or herbicides. Also, don’t worry about the other bugs your milkw**d attracts. Seeing lots of different bugs on your plants means you’re doing it right!

Tonight is the night of the Northside Rock N Roll Carnival. It’s been a great time so far despite the heat and the horrible person/people that stole our chalk and bubbles. We got more chalk! We’ve got more butterflies for you to meet! And of course, more live music!

Please come out after 5pm and be sure to stop by the butterfly enclosure before sundown. The butterflies have to be put to bed once it gets too dark, sorry!

Happy 4th! 🇺🇸

We’ve got butterflies all day today at Northside Rock N Roll Carnival! Come make a butterfly friend!

Side note - someone stole all the chalk, the bucket it was in, all the bubble wands, and our giant checkers set we left out for everyone to enjoy. So if you know who took those, kick them in the shin and tell them the butterfly lady sends her regards! 😠
