This week's Plant of the Week is.... Mums!
Mums, or chrysanthemums, are popular in the fall for seasonal displays, window boxes, and plantings. It’s easy to see why: there are thousands of varieties that come in a wide array of sizes, shapes, and colors. Plus, they’re easy to care for and affordable. We offer mums in 4.5" and 8.5" pots, hanging baskets, and large terracotta-color planters. You can also find them in our seasonal blooming containers.
Mums do best when they get a minimum of 6 hours of sunlight and are consistently watered. They like to drink a lot of water, so depending on their container and location, they could need water as often as every day. Using your finger to check the top inch of soil, feel to see if it is dry. If so, give your mum a drink.
When choosing your mums, there are a few factors to consider:
Do you want instant color, or a longer display of blooms? Mums take around 20-30 days to go from tight buds to a mass of blooms, so if you want to watch the magic happen, or are timing their peak with the arrival of friends or family, choose a mum with tight buds and little to no color showing.
After that, you just have to decide on the color (or colors) that bring you the most joy, then the size, and finally, how many to buy!
