US Army Major Charity E. Adams and Captain Mary Kearney are seen here inspecting WAC- Women's Army Corps- members of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion in England in 1945.

Charity Adams was the first Black cadet to be commissioned into the WAAC- Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (which later became the WAC) in 1942. Because of the color of her skin and despite having a last name beginning with an 'A,' Adams had to wait for all four hundred white women to be commissioned before any Black women's names were read.

Describing that moment, she said, "Whatever doubts we might have later we put on our gold bars and that day we knew ourselves as members of the great fraternity of officers."

Black women were not allowed to join the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) and many cities purposely tried to keep Black recruits from joining up from their stations- whether aiming for officer ranks or not.

This photo is so much more than an 'On This Day' moment. It is a glimpse at women who perservered through systemic racism to serve during WWII.

Have you heard of Charity Adams? Would you like to hear more about these amazing women, especially as we celebrate ?

Dear Friends and fellow collectors, Terri and I have had a life-changing event occur recently which will require the immediate closing of our online shop for the foreseeable future. about 7 weeks ago while getting up to let our dogs out about 130am, I tripped on the return and hit my head against the edge of a steamer trunk. After a quick visit to the ER for stitches, no internal bleeding was noted initially, however about 3 weeks ago stroke-like symptoms required an additional trip to the ER which revealed a sizable pocket of bleeding on The right side of my head which was affecting the motor function on the left side of my body, I was sent by ambulance to Phoenix where surgery was performed the next day. My prognosis is good, however there is a 30% chance of a repeat performance of the bleeding and need for additional surgery. So after 53 years in the hobby and 35 years operating Stewart's Military Antiques in Arizona, Terri and I have decided to retire and step away from the day-to-day operations of SMA and concentrate on our volunteering interests and our family. Our inventory has been sold to Mr. Kenneth Price of Iron Clad Militaria, an honest up and coming young dealer, who shares our love for the hobby. There are not enough words in our vocabulary to adequately express to each of you our sincere thanks for your continued support, in some instances support reaching back over 40 years. We apologize for the suddeness of our notification however my physical condition required quick action on our part, so that we can move on and close this chapter of our lives. Thank you all so very much for becoming part of our collecting family, we will never forget you.Larry & Terri
