I was asked to make a plaque for a dentist who was leaving a unit on Fort Campbell (my old unit ironically, AND she had the same last name! I never actually met her though). I didn't design the artwork on the plaque, and I only had a few days before the ceremony, but I think it came out nicely. Maple for the plaque, with Black Walnut and Blood wood inlays for the frame.

A family member asked for a wall mount clothes hanger. Typically these are random pieces of wood glued together to make kind of a wall decoration, and then some of them are designed to fold down and you hang your article of clothing on the peg sticking out.

He wanted to use them in his laundry room and hang clothes hangers on it, so it needed less pegs.

I decided to go with an Art Deco style, very minimalist and clean. The wood is Wenge and Maple. On the back I created a hidden French Cleat so that it hangs tight to the wall, yet is strong enough to hold the mount and several articles of clothing.

The pictures show one mount with the pegs sticking out, and one with the pegs folded up. Rare earth magnets hold the pegs up when not in use.

This was actually quite hard to make, in order to make it simple and clean looking, but I'm very happy with how it came out.

So one day Gayla A Boelens asked me if I could refinish some drawers she has rescued from an old treadle sewing machine. They were painted an ugly brown. After cleaning them up, I suggested making a cabinet for them, and she mentioned it would be nice to put a printer on top.

I went with red oak and stained to match the cabinets. Part of the top is that oak, but unstained, and part is red Zebra wood. The pictures are under a tree, they don't really have blotches on them. I made the sides open so you can still see the awesome drawers. This was a lot of fun, but the math... Not so much 😬

About five years ago I wandered into The Wooden Needle to drop something off for a friend. I met Gayla A Boelens , who off -handed asked me if I could make something (I had made what I dropped off, which led to that question). Since then, we have become good friends, and I've made stuff I've never even heard of before, and I have loved every minute of it. I've made display tables and cubbies and stuff to hang stuff and a machine to wind yarn and tools to spin yarn, and a sock wall, and you name it. At this point I think she likes to try and stump me, which makes it even more fun.

Anyway, this it a coffee maker 💁. You put the grounds in the strainer and pour your hot water through. The bottom is various woods, the neck is maple, and the top is Sapele. After testing it, I added a dimple in the top for the strainer handle.

She says it makes the best coffee ever 😎

Can't wait to see what she has for me next 😬

A client who has a working K9 dog sadly had the dog pass away (not from his work). This is the urn box I made for him, and some matching coasters.

It's made of Sapele (a type of African Mahogany), Wenge for the base, and hickory splines on the corners.

Gayla A Boelens at The Wooden Needle asked me to make two spool (bobbin?) lazy susans (she has two different sizes). This is what we came up with. If you look closely you can see that originally they had more dowels sticking up. They were also taller originally. We modified the design a couple of times to get it right. If I make them again, I have a much better idea of how much room to leave for fingers, how tall to make the dowels before there are too many stacked on it etc. It's was a fun project though. I like the kind where I solve problems.

Kirsten Bass saw something similar to these and asked if we could buy one. After I woke up from passing out (buy a wooden planter?!?! Really???) , I told her I would make her some. The metal brackets were shelf supports we bought years ago and never used. They are made is cedar fence pickets and a cedar 2x4 that I cut down.

So this is a yarn skein winder. The Wooden Needle needed a way to rewind skeins that had loosened for whatever reason. You hook the skein on each end and crank the winder handle. As it tightens the far end pulls forward on a drawer glide. There is a spring there to keep it tight. They had used it for a bit, then asked me to mount it on a sawhorse they had. They had already nicknamed it Captain Hook, so I had a little fun with that. 😁
