πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯ Has your Florida County dropped your burn ban yet? Let us know in the comments. I think both Lake and Polk are ready to make biochar this weekend. πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯ Driving around the State, from Vero up to Ormond Beach, Crystal River to Gainesville I see those burn piles getting bigger out there in the pastures. There is no better use for that material than making biochar. Biochar is Permanent Soil Carbon. Forever. Lifetime upon lifetime. 100,000,000 year half-life. The stability of this material is incomprehensible.
πŸ’§πŸ’§πŸ’§ Now lets mention the benefits, which are very simular to a temporary compost addition. Increased water holding capacity, 15,000 gallons of water for every 1% carbon in the soil per acre. LESS IRRIGATION WATER NEEDED! πŸ’§πŸ’§πŸ’§
🦠🦠🦠 2x more microorganism diversity and 70% more beneficial microbes when the biochar is applied preinoculated. GROW A SOIL FOOD WEB!🦠🦠🦠
Biochar fixes Florida's lost fertilizer problem after every summer storm. Both cation and anion exchange capacity are increased substantially. 1% biochar in a mature soil boosts CEC 10 points and AEC 5 points. This holds expensive fertilizers in place until the plants are ready to use it. NO MORE SENDING YOUR COSTLY PLANT NUTRITION DOWN THE RIVER. 🐟🐟🐟
The studies say increased yields, better gains in sandy soils and even better results when preinoculated or composted before application. 🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳

We have kilns available today. 50 gallon and 100 gallon inverted pyramid kilns. πŸ’°420 & 600πŸ’°. These are flame-cap style biochar kilns made locally from mild steel and are the easiest and quickest way to making a substantial quantity of biochar for your gardens. The kilns are heavy duty tools for the farm or homestead. The inverted pyramid kilns have a 5 to 1 conversion ratio so expect to burn 500 gallons of dry brushy wood waste to make 100 gallons of permanent biochar ($500-1000 value). Fires burn fast and hot, you can make a full kiln of biochar in 2 hours. πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯

We just dropped off a few permaculture books at The Groveland Exchange. Grab a coffee and turn a few pages for inspiration on the homestead.
If you are visiting our page from Groveland Exchange, welcome. We teach Central Florida how to turn their burn piles into the best soil on the planet. Scroll the profile and check out some of the educational and research articles about biochar.
Thank You,
PK.

🌲🌲🌲Merry Christmas🌲🌲🌲

Let's have a quick conversation about medium/large scale biochar production. For the followers who have a tree service, this post is for you.

There are a few types that work well.

Air Curtain Burner: Trailer mounted or tracked machines, like the TigerCat in the linked story. These make high temperature biochar that last a long time, but...they are really designed for material reduction. They burn a lot of green (moist) material quickly with a secondary concern for the quantity of biochar produced. As a result the volume of biochar made is significantly less than these other processes. There is a long squirrel cage fan on the long end of a dumpster box. This fan provides extra oxygen to burn the moist green material, but makes quite a bit of ash as well, losing the valuable carbon to the atmosphere and reducing the biochar quantities made. Machines can be anywhere from $150,000 to $600,000 and require multiple pieces of large equipment, loaders, excavators to feed it. These kilns are being used to clear abandoned citrus groves in Polk County today.

Big Box Kiln: Purpose built steel dumpster type flame cap kiln (BB-12 plans available from Darren McAvoy, extension agent up in the NorthWest USA) These REQUIRE DRY BIOMASS (wood, brush, etc.) So expect seasonal use or a covered area to keep biomass dry. The big box kilns maximize the quantity of biochar made. They make excellent quality high temperature biochar. Equipment required to load them and tip them is a simple mini excavator. Water or a water truck is also required for quenching. Cost new is around $10,000 and is simple, lightweight and easy to drag around a site as required. Running a burn in a BB-12 is more delicate than an air curtain burner, but simple after understanding how to run a flame cap biochar burn. If you want one, I can get it done. I think these are under represented out here in Florida currently.

Continuous Rotary Kiln: These machines make good quality medium temperature biochar from dry woodchips. These machines process material continuously. This design would be best for a large facility. Difficulties include drying the woodchips and making the woodchips an appropriate size to burn properly in the machine. A double grind in a tub grinder or chipdrops from chip trucks work well. Equipment to load the continuous rotary kiln is usually a Bobcat type skid steer. These continuous rotary kilns cost from $600,000 to $1,400,000 and most are installed under a structure. Best for large facilities.

All of the biochars created by these different processes should be composted before use as a soil amendment. These biochars should not be composted if you intend to use them to clean up polluted surface waters, outflows or other filtering, odor absorbing functions, (manure lagoons, compost runoff, etc.)

🌳🌳🌳 ONE-TIME SOIL UPGRADE THAT LASTS FOREVER --- Literally! 🌳🌳🌳

Imagine adding something to your garden or raised beds JUST ONCE… and it keeps working its magic for the next 1,000–4000 years. [BC has a 100,000,000 year half-life, let's not over promise here - legal department]. No more annual compost backaches, no more brown soils turning back to sand after a few years. A single application and your soil is permanently richer, holds water like a sponge, feeds your plants longer, and grows healthier food for DECADES!!! ["megaannums" yeah it's a word]

That’s Biochar --- nature’s permanent carbon vault......unless your garden soil catches fire [Safety Note: NO W**D TORCHING BAREFOOT]

Every handful you mix in locks away carbon for millennia, [πŸ™„] pulling COβ‚‚ out of the sky and storing it safely in your soil. You’re not just gardening --- you’re healing the planet, one raised bed at a time. πŸ₯’πŸ“πŸ«‘πŸŒΆπŸ₯’πŸ“πŸ«‘πŸŒΆπŸ₯’πŸ“πŸ«‘πŸŒΆ

Your tomatoes will be juicierπŸ…πŸ…πŸ…, your [Florida native] flowers more vibrant🌺🌺🌺, your fruit trees unstoppable🐿🐿[πŸ˜‚]🐿🐿 --- and your grandkids’ grandkids [grandkids, grandkids, grandkids] will still be reaping the benefits. πŸ₯πŸ₯πŸ₯ This is the most optimistic thing you can do for the future of our earth while growing the best garden you’ve ever had.
Premium, high-quality biochar --- black, bamboo, inoculated with worm castings & rock dust and ready for application.
