I've been trying for years to convince my daughter to get into quilting, but she's obstinate like her mother and continued to refuse. So, imagine my delight when I get a phone call from her, and she says, "OK, Mom, don't freak out...but I have an idea for a quilt."
Needless to say, I was happy to pick up four coordinating Halloween fabrics for her idea while on my road trip to ND. (Thanks, Stacie at Painted Pony Quilt Shop for the Halloween selection to choose from!)
Once I got to Kathy Corby 's, she and I talked about patterns, and I gave her some ideas of quick and easy quilts. Kathy decided to try a disappearing 4-patch. It turned out great, but it was smaller than she wanted. Hmmm, what to do?
Kathy had played around with some fussy-cut squares, so she decided to use those as cornerstones along with a wide black border. I thought that would look great, but that just wasn't going to be enough for my creative daughter. She wanted to add a couple of ghost blocks to her borders. Easy ghost blocks out of squares and triangles? No. Simple applique ghosts? No. Instead, she wanted something she had seen on Pinterest, and there we went down the foundation paper piecing road. Of course, this whole ghost conversation was happening the night before I was due to head home, so no pressure or anything! π
Enter, the parchment paper. I drew put FPP sections for Kathy to piece together, but I also told her I was going to bed and she would have to figure it out later. Later ended up being the night after I got home. Kathy video called me to walk her through FPP. If you know FPP, you know you are working backwards and upside down at the same time, so try explaining that over the phone! A couple of video calls, Kathy had a good start to her ghost, and I told her, "Good luck!"
Kathy finally finished her first ghost at 11:23 Monday night. Be sure to read her texts, they are hilarious! And, Kathy is still refusing to make another ghost...she said instead she will make a skull. I'm not sure why she thinks a skull will be easier, but like I said at the beginning of this post, she is obstinate and you can't tell her a thing! πππ
