History:
Scholet Furniture offers a fine array of furniture, bedding and other home furnishings. Walking up the front steps of the building at 561 Main St., you are greeted by a strong sense of history. The large three-story brick structure was built in 1874 and named the Hotel Augustan by its owner Augustan Smith. The original building is strikingly similar to what visitors see today. While the Scholet family did plenty of work renovating the building they bought in 1976, the place that Teddy Roosevelt spoke in front of a large crowd in 1914 remains seemingly unchanged. The Scholet family got into the furniture business in 1931 when Leo Scholet purchased the Myer’s furniture store, which was around the corner from the hotel on Division Street. Richard Scholet, Leo’s son, took over the business in 1967. On Sept. 27, 1974 a fire burned the building to the ground. The business temporary ran out of the Scholet’s home in Lawyersville. In February 1976 the Scholets purchased the hotel, began renovation work and on October 1, 1978 the new Scholet Furniture store had its grand opening. Scholet Furniture is proud to be one of the oldest buildings, located in the center of the community. Every year the Cobleskill community gathers in Center Park for an annual tree lighting ceremony. Santa greets the crowd as children gather every year on the front porch of Scholet Furniture to have their photo taken with Santa. Today, Scholet Furniture is still family owned and operated, with the reputation of being the number one home furnishings retailer in each market it serves. Scholet Furniture serves our markets through a state of the art distribution center located in Oneonta. Markets including top name brands such as Lazy-Boy, England, Flex-steel, Bassett, Serta and more. We continue to grow with a total of four locations in Cobleskill, Norwich and Oneonta, New York.
