Photo by Mack H. Frost / The Grinnell Creek Cliffs, otherwise known as the Sleeping Giant or The Cat. This view is from the turnout with the vault toilet half way up Sylvan Pass, looking back to the northeast. The Cliffs are a ridge that separates Grinnell Creek on the west from Mormon Creek on the east. The large curving mountain in the upper right of this photo is the actual Sleeping Giant Mountain. Some people, myself included, think the Cliffs resemble a sleeping cat, with its feet stuck out in front of its head with its pert ears, and the hump of its back.

Today was one of those days when the internet wasn't working, the computer said I need to update programs, and the day was just too full of other obligations! I finally got things working and decided to look back at some of my Yellowstone bison photos and mention how their appearance varies so much by season.
Now there are literally thousands of bison roaming throughout Yellowstone. A few weeks ago all the new babies were popping out sporting the nickname "red dogs". Of course that refers to their reddish fur color when they are quite young. By the end of summer, as the photo of mother and child illustrates, the babies are brown and look like their parents!
In the Spring as the adult bison are shedding their winter coats, the loose fur hangs from their bodies like Spanish moss from trees in the South! They look motley and unkempt! I even heard a visitor in the park question once why the staff wasn't brushing them. By the end of summer the shedding is past and the new soft fur takes on a well-groomed look. If you are looking at some old bison photos and can't remember what time of year you took those photos, look at their fur!

I recently captured this image of a black bear cub of the year (COY) in Northwest Wyoming. The young bear scurried about 50 foot up this tree. I was lucky enough to catch it "Hanging Around."

Photo by Mack H. Frost / I was coming back from a trip to Glacier National Park in October 2025. I had the time to travel through the northern part of Yellowstone NP. All the aspen, cottonwoods and willows were in fall color. I got this image from the deck of the bridge crossing the Lamar River in the Specimen Ridge area. The gully made a pleasing "S" curve and there was even a young crescent Moon in the upper left of the shot.
