Standing in the crisp morning air on the banks of the Snake River in Teton National Park, I hoped a bull elk would cross the river. To my surprise, a small but beautiful bull moose shared the morning's beauty with me.

Travel around your own backyard or in far away places can introduce you to some amazing creatures. These are a few of my favorites!
In New Mexico near Santa Fe one can experience the "march of the tarantulas" around this time of year. This was the only live specimen we found on our drive from the mountains down into Santa Fe. Sadly, several of his companions did not make it across the highway safely. They can travel far to find a mate!
The Giant Ichneumon Wasp was in our own yard, laying eggs on a newly created tree stump. I had to do some research on this one time sighting! It does not sting like the smaller wasps that have occupied our yard for years and bores down into the wood to lay her eggs into the larvae of some sort of moth. I haven't seen one again.
The other photo has yet to be identified. If anyone knows what it is, please let me know! It resembles a cross between a locust and a cricket, which doesn't exist!

Photo by Mack H. Frost / I had to get out of the house last Saturday, so I drove up to the Chief Joseph Highway and then over the top of the Beartooths. I found this scene right beside the road. The fall color was well along on the Chief Joe and after the weather on Sunday night and Monday, there's probably not much left. Only a few aspen groves left on the Beartooth highway Saturday, and down in Red Lodge the color is still about a week from being at its peak.

Flowers are by far my favorite things to photograph. I will sit in the mud to get the perfect shot of a flower too short for me to remain standing!
I have often contemplated the despised dandelion and other feathery, seed infested weeds. They are truly beautiful creations yet cause the fanatic gardener and yardman endless woe. Study these gorgeous beings and be a little more tolerant of the child who wants to blow all those hundreds of seeds back into your lawn. They are also God's creations! Cherish their beauty before you snap off their heads and toss them into the wheelbarrow!

An early visit to Yellowstone this past summer resulted in a few shots I had not had previously. The black bear munching on the dandelions was sweet, as was the little sandhill crane with its parents. My favorite was the marmot napping on the rocks next to the lake. She looked at first like she wasn't even alive, but gradually she opened her eyes and stared at me as if to say, "just let me nap in peace".

I am looking forward to my autumn trips into Yellowstone as the animals come down from the cooler mountain peaks and get ready for the winter ahead. The bears will attack the chokecherry bushes and the moths on rocky mountain slopes. Other animals will gather food supplies into hollow trees and burrows. Best of all the roads will be a bit less congested!
