This is what it was all for. Every choice in this home was intentional. From layout, to the finishes, to the smallest details. Nothing here happened by accident.

We build toward a feeling first, the work backward until the space earns it. This is the joy in the last step. Watching an idea become a place someone actually gets to live in.

This is the part nobody posts.

Exposed studs. Bare subfloor. Dust everywhere. Somewhere in here, the same client who was so confident about their selections a few months ago is standing in a half-finished room, wondering if they made the right call.

We wrote about this exact moment in this month's blog post. It's the dip in the middle of the run, when the energy from the start has worn off, and the finish line still isn't in sight.

This is where trust between the client and the designer re-enters the project. Every decision in this room was already made, working backward, from the finished space before a single wall went up. We don't guess our way through construction. We plan from the end and work back, so the mess in the middle is never a mystery to us, even when it feels like one to the people living through it.

Things have to look worse before they look better. We promise.

Before we ever draw a blueprint, we sit down with our clients to really understand what they want their days to feel like, how they want to live in the space, what’s not working, and what their dreaming of. That conversation is where every project begins.

This is the dreaming phase. The part of the process where nothing is decided yet, so everything feels possible. 2D floor plans turn into detailed wall elevations, then into 3D renderings so you can see and feel the space before it’s built. Alongside it all, a wall of fabric and finish samples slowly become a real, considered plan.

Did anyone warn you that a remodel or new build would feel like an emotional rollercoaster? Because it will. And that's completely normal.

Over the years I've walked enough projects to know that what happens emotionally during a build is just as real as what happens physically. There's the dreaming, the excitement, the dip in the middle when exposed studs don't look anything like the rendering, the light at the end of the tunnel, and finally, the moment you walk into your finished space and can't quite believe it's yours.

Every single phase has a feeling that goes with it. And when you know what to expect, the hard parts become a little easier to move through.

The wall tile in this bathroom evokes an emotion of gradual movement. It encourages the eye to slow down and wander. We layered matte and glossy in the same warm tone, so the light never lands the same way twice. It's grounded in one place and quietly glowing in the next.

Behind the freestanding tub, the soft ridges of the fluted tile turn a quiet corner into a space that makes you want to linger. A tiled built-in niche nearby feels like an intentional part of the architecture rather than an afterthought.

The curbless shower flows straight onto a heated stone floor and is a warmth you feel before you notice it. It is a welcome comfort underfoot on cold mornings, and a quiet practicality afterward as the water simply dries itself away. One less thing to think about and one more reason the room feels calm the moment you step in.

This project was always about one thing: understanding how two people live, what frustrates and calms them, then building a space that rises.
