NATIONAL MOVIE NIGHT

National Movie Night, on the second Friday in June, encourages us to start (or restart) a tradition of movie nights with friends and family. Pop some popcorn, grab a blanket and your favorite buddy, put away the cell phones and tablets, and then queue up a string of movies for a fun night of entertainment.

Movies have been bringing people together for over 100 years. The movie stars and the stories entertain us, connecting us while we create memories. As technology evolves, so does how we enjoy our movie nights. From the theater to reel-to-reel home movies, the VCR, DVD, and streaming, we've been enjoying movies on big and small screens. Drive-in movies invited us to enjoy films from the comfort of our cars. Today, our video library is as large as we want it to be thanks to streaming services. We can even enjoy movies in our own backyards projected onto screens under the stars.

NATIONAL PEANUT BUTTER COOKIE DAY

June 12 is National Peanut Butter Cookie Day, allowing cookie lovers and peanut butter lovers to step away from the pies and cakes to indulge in a little peanut butter and cookie therapy.

Alabama's American agricultural extension educator, George Washington Carver, promoted the peanut extensively. Well-known for his promotions, Carver compiled 105 peanut recipes from various cookbooks, agricultural bulletins, and other sources. In 1916, he created a Research Bulletin called How to Grow the Peanut and 105 Ways of Preparing it for Human Consumption. The bulletin included three recipes calling for crushed or chopped peanuts as one of its ingredients. However, peanut butter cookies were not one of them.

It was in the early 1920s peanut butter began to be listed as an ingredient in cookies.

Incidentally, the peanut butter we know and love today didn't become commercially available until the 1920s. In 1922, Joseph Rosefield patented the process of homogenization and sold it to a company that began making a peanut butter called Peter Pan.

No one knows why we press criss-crossed fork marks into our peanut butter cookies before baking. However, homemade peanut butter cookies would just not be the same without a bit of decoration.

NATIONAL RED ROSE DAY

Each year on June 12, people in the U.S. recognize National Red Rose Day, honoring the flower that is the June birth flower and a symbol of love and romance.

Red roses were used in many early cultures as decorations in wedding ceremonies and wedding attire. It was through this practice the red rose eventually became known as a symbol of love and romance. The tradition of giving red roses as the strongest message of love is still practiced today.

Red roses offer more than the message of love. They are also known for their fragrance and are cultivated for perfumes.

In June, red roses are in bloom in flower gardens across the United States. Their beauty and sweet scent fill the air with happiness. Furthermore, roses come in a wide variety of cultivars. From low-growing shrubs with dainty blossoms to long-stemmed robust plants, roses offer deep scarlets and bright berry-colored reds.

NATIONAL CAREER NURSE ASSISTANTS' DAY

National Career Nurse Assistants' Day happens on the first day of National Nursing Assistants' Week each year. On this day, we recognize all nursing assistants who dedicate their lives to the well-being of others, whether it's been 5 years or 58 years of service.

Nursing assistants work in hospitals and nursing homes alike, performing everyday living tasks for the elderly, chronically ill, or rehabilitation patients who cannot care for themselves. Of course, nursing assistants require in-depth training to gain the necessary qualifications to cover a wide scope of responsibilities. The American Red Cross, as well as other providers, provide classes to study for nursing assistants. Although states may distribute CNA certification exams, their certification follows a standard set of qualifications created by the government.

Career Nursing Assistants also play a host of roles in the lives of residents in nursing homes, hospitals, and long-term care facilities. Amazingly, they often assist people to remain independent in their own homes for as long as possible. In addition, a CNA provides essential support for patient needs. This includes promoting mental, physical, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being, too.

Take time to thank a CNA for the care they provide by leaving them a thank you note. Whether it's in a nursing home, in-home care, or another facility, a CNA commits to provide quality care for the elderly.

NATIONAL EGG ROLL DAY

Roll out the red carpet for National Egg Roll Day celebrations on June 10. This yummy food holiday delivers an American Dream story, plus satisfies a craving at the same time. You know you’re craving an egg roll now!

The egg roll began as a Chinese-American tradition that extended to Vietnamese immigrants reaching for the American Dream. These traditions grew from the unfailing dedication of families in chop suey palaces serving hungry workers. What started as an essential role in making dreams come true for several generations of immigrants in the United States, this delicious food item continues on for many still today.

Egg rolls are a satisfying snack or an exciting part of a meal at home or away. Restaurants across the country perfected their own versions of the egg roll with a variety of finely chopped ingredients--pork, shrimp, cabbage, onions, bamboo shoots, water chestnuts, and seasonings all rolled up in a thin pastry wrap and deep-fried.

Our ability to celebrate National Egg Roll Day is as close as our freezer, telephone, restaurant, or even our own recipe. We encourage you to enjoy it as a snack or part of an entre today. Egg rolls meet strict diets, exotic flavors, and so much more! What more could we ask for?

NATIONAL ICED TEA DAY

June 10 is National Iced Tea Day celebrating one of summer's favorite refreshing drinks. Whether you prefer sweetened or unsweetened, with or without lemon, we invite you to pour yourself a glass as we relax and enjoy some random information about iced tea.

Recipes for iced tea have been found dating back to the 1870s. The Buckeye Cookbook (1876) and Housekeeping in Old Virginia (1877) both contain iced tea recipes. It is believed, however, that iced tea started to appear in the United States in the 1860s and became widespread in the 1870s. During that time, hotels and railroads offered iced tea on their beverage menus.

In 1904, iced tea was introduced at the World's Fair in St. Louis by a tea merchant who planned to serve hot tea. However, a sudden heat wave prompted fair-goers to become uninterested in the beverage. The merchant decided to add ice to the already brewed tea, which led to a frenzy of people lining up to taste the wonderful new drink. Today, the U.S. consumes nearly 50 billion glasses of tea per year!
