The creation of a diaphonized specimen is a meticulous, weeks-long scientific and artistic process. The animal is preserved using a "clearing and staining" technique. Enzymes dissolve the flesh to make it translucent, while dyes color the bones (red) and cartilage (blue). We have two stingrays in the shop now!

The Superstition: Victorians believed that time stood still at the moment of a soul's passing into a timeless afterlife. If the household clocks (or the "Sad Hour" clock on the casket) were not halted at the exact time of death, it was believed the deceased’s spirit would remain trapped in the home and haunt the living. Stop by the shop and grab your own sad hour. We only have one available!!

Mourning in Victorian society was formalized and deeply personal, with people wearing specific clothing, exchanging funeral cards, creating jewelry from locks of hair, and displaying images of the deceased. Post-mortem photographs, rather than being seen as morbid, were considered necessary acts of remembrance. Children and infants were often positioned to appear peacefully asleep, sometimes held in a parent’s arms or surrounded by flowers, creating a sense of serenity intended to comfort the living and maintain a connection to those lost.
