The story of these antique Shaker style ladder back chairs continues.... they have been thoroughly treated with Natchez solution, this provides some protection to the wood while conserving the existing patina and showcasing the wood. The frames have been tightened. This process has highlighted some of the incredible details of their construction.

The mule ear posts are shaved to a half inch thickness, and the ladderback slats are an incredible 3/16" thickness (or thinness), the rails are all hand shaped, just incredible craftsmanship and detail... note the tiny wooden pegs securing the top slats.

During the cleaning process it became clear that the original finish had a wax component, and was probably very similar to the composition of Natchez solution, therefore I won't be adding any additional finish to these chairs other than that or pure beeswax. These will be left to cure for a bit and then new seats will be added. The only options to hold true to their 19th century origin are woven cane, such as they were found with, or a natural rush. If someone wants to stake a claim, I will honor that choice, otherwise I will probably return the seats to the weave they came to me wearing... feel free to share your thoughts!

Starting on my next project for the shop! So story time... these gorgeous antique Shaker chairs were pulled from the loft in a storage shed, they had been there or similar for at least a few decades. The original finish was probably oil or wax, but virtually none of it was left. After letting them adjust to being indoor pets for several months it's time to show them some love!

The early process: The old cane seats are cut away. A thorough dusting with a stiff natural bristle brush removes most of the dust and surface dirt, then I clean with white vinegar. Look at the dirt on that rag!

Check out the difference a gentle cleaning makes... I am loving the patina these chairs earned the hard way... this will be a gentle preservation rather than a full restoration.

Check back for more of the story as the process unfolds!

Finished refurbished chair and footstool for some lovely new friends! This one needed the springs completely retied top and bottom, got a new seat deck and some additional padding, the last reupholster was probably in the 1990s, but this is a great early 20th century chair... this is why you buy antique and vintage and restore. Nothing made today will still be gracing anyone's home in 100 years.
