HISTORIC DISTINCT

As Principal Designer at TAM STONE, Inc., Tam is best known for her stewardship in producing historically accurate, yet vibrant, living spaces in significant historic properties. Tam’s training in Interior Design and Architecture Studies at Parsons The New School for Design, coupled with a Ph.D. in Process Design and Quality Management provide the foundation for her cohesive, multi-disciplinary ap

proach to design that consistently results in environments that are striking and sophisticated. At the core of Tam’s design philosophy is her belief that the foundation of any good design lies in understanding the architectural and historical context of a space. This philosophy, coupled with an unwavering attention to detail, strong aesthetic for balance, proportion, rhythm and texture, culminates in spaces that are richly layered and feel at once modern and curated. With over 20 years of interior design experience, Tam has served as lead designer for period properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as a wide range of projects including remodel and decoration of large-scale manor homes, urban garden apartments, mountain/beach retreats, collegiate sorority houses and corporate offices. In addition to her creative design work, Tam is a talented feature speaker and appears regularly on the KCTV-5 Better Kansas City show as an interior design expert. Tam has also published a book and numerous articles on process design and quality management that are in distribution both nationally and internationally.

Travel of all kinds inform the designs we create for our clients. Sometimes it’s for fun & inspiration and other times it’s purely educational.

Over the past several years more of our projects have included remodeling in addition to interior decoration. So this week I’m attending the International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas. And what a show it is! For current projects, I’m sourcing everything from acoustic drywall, to pavilions, to custom colored refrigerators. It’s ALL here ... and everything in between!

If you’d like to see some of the new, fantastic ideas in home design, follow along in our stories where I’ll share some of the cool things coming soon to our homes!

For now, I’m leaving you with some images from the newly opened Nomad Hotel where I am staying. It’s definitely NOT your generic hotel from the moment you walk in. The entire experience at The Nomad beckons a bygone era of European opulence. The details are amazing to this design gal ... everything from the original artwork to the two-story, library-style dining room that houses 25,000 volumes from David Rockefeller’s personal collection are extraordinary and worth a visit if you find yourself heading to Vegas

This incredible Frank Lloyd Wright home in Kansas City is up for auction on August 12th (no reserve)! There is a great video and more photos on the website to walk you through the home and all of it's features. The home is very well maintained and is being auctioned with some of the original furnishings.

Country Club of Missouri friends will likely see a lot of similarities between this Sondern-Adler House and the architecture of the Club. CCMO was designed by architect E. Fay Jones. Jones was a student of Wright, and like Wright was also awarded the AIA Gold Medal. Jones was the only of Wright's students to be honored with the prestigious award.

Frank Lloyd (done alllll kinds of) Wright!

A rare opportunity to own one of Frank Lloyd Wright's early Usonian-style homes, built by Wright in 1939 and expanded by the architect in 1948. A cypress and brick exterior virtually melts into the surrounding wooded landscape. Enjoy seamless use of indoor and outdoor spaces with multiple terraces and floor to ceiling windows.

Admirers of Wright will appreciate the clerestory windows, welcoming fireplaces and intimate spaces created in and around the home with the use of local materials.

Nestled into the canopy, the home offers incredible privacy, yet is located in the heart of Kansas City, only minutes away from The Plaza, Westport, and 39th St shopping districts, as well as the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art and the Crossroads Art District. Sometimes offered as a short-term rental, the Sondern-Adler house is a testament to Wright's vision.

How I’ll always remember the great Notre Dame. (photo from east facade)

・・・
This view of the east facade of Cathedral Notre Dame de Paris with its incredible flying buttresses never disappoints. I took this photo from the Square Jean XXIII while studying design at Parsons Paris. .
We never met in a classroom for the entirety of my studies in Paris. Instead, we would meet up with our professor each morning at a quaint bistro for an espresso and spend the remainder of the day studying on location. On this day we were obviously studying French Gothic architecture, but also honing our perspective drawing skills. It was an educational experience like no other and one I won't soon forget! ... 📷 TAM

INSPIRATION FOR THE CHATOL LOUNGE ... The RMS Queen Mary was a luxurious ocean liner that carried the world’s rich and famous on transatlantic journeys between the United States and Europe in the era before passenger flight. Commissioning of ultra modern ships like the Queen Mary, and the glamorous transatlantic travel lifestyle depicted in their advertising, fueled public fascination with “everything ocean liner”. Sleek, sophisticated and sexy, the ocean liner style was replicated in architecture and interiors throughout the Art Deco era.
My current project has any “ship-style” features, including horizontal banding on the walls and round port hole windows. To reinforce the ship-style elements at The Chatol, we are drawing from the iconic Queen Mary Observation Bar as a significance source of inspiration for the bar in our own Lounge. Like in the Queen Mary, our bar is being completely transformed into a semi-circle with exotic wood veneers, horizontal steel banding and high gloss finishes. I’m confident the end result will be stunning!
Over the next days I will share some of the design plans for our bar here and in Instagram Stories ... starting with an original historic photo of the current Lounge. The image in this post is the original Queen Mary Observation Bar (c. 1936), followed by a contemporary image of the bar after restorations. I think they did an amazing job with the restoration.

I just came across this image from Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, the “New Orient Express” ... a luxury train that whisks affluent travelers to some of the most sought after European destinations in style.

I’ve probably seen the image a hundred times before and always admired the rich woods and 1920s/1030s styling. Yesterday I spent several hours selecting fabrics for the Living Room at ... and seeing this image for the 101st time stopped me in my tracks!

I’m planning two Art Deco lounge chairs in a rich velvet for the Living Room ... a deep blue with a hint of teal and a strong contrast welt to highlight the lines of the chair. After seeing the royal blue animal print in this Orient Express image, I’m reconsidering the solid velvet... Maybe a rich blue animal print velvet would be an interesting touch. Maybe it would be too much?

What do you think of this look? I’d love to hear!

The wallpaper is actually created from hand painted Japanese Shoji screen squares. Ann and Gano Chance purchased the screen panels on a trip to Japan and had them applied to the Dining Room walls. More detail images are in our Instastories today.

The Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, as the 1925 Paris Exposition is officially known, is recognized as the birth place of Art Deco design. The exposition was dedicated to introducing a new modern style of decorative arts and architecture to the world. Multiple pavilions at the exposition were built by department and furniture stores, and decorated by prominent French designers to showcase the avant-garde interior design that would later become known as Art Deco.

This is us... Me (Tam), my husband Gil and our twin daughters Ann & Abby the day we purchased The Chatol.
I get asked most everyday about our connection to The Chatol and the Chance family, so here it is ... Gil's great-grandmother is A.B. Chance's sister, Sallie Chance. We are fortunate to have many cool historic documents and personal effects from Gil's family. I look forward to sharing those along with some of the history of the home in the weeks to come.
