Please welcome our summer architecture intern, Sydney Artlip!

Sydney recently completed her sophomore year at Clemson University and was drawn to BOUDREAUX by the firm’s emphasis on community and historic preservation. Last summer, she studied abroad in Paris and Berlin - an experience that further strengthened her appreciation for architecture and the stories places can tell.

This summer, Sydney is excited to learn more about the history of the firm and how BOUDREAUX has helped shape spaces she has interacted with throughout her life. Outside of the studio, she enjoys hiking, running, and playing soccer. We’re excited to have her on the team this summer and look forward to the perspective and energy she’ll bring to the studio!

It's Preservation Month! Today, we’re celebrating the rehabilitation of the Modjeska Monteith Simkins House - an important landmark in Columbia’s Civil Rights history.

Our team led the effort to restore both the main house and the historic outbuilding at the rear of the property, bringing new life to spaces deeply connected to the legacy of Modjeska Monteith Simkins. Supported through National Park Service Civil Rights funding and a Save America’s Treasures Grant, the project carefully preserved original materials and character-defining features while sensitively incorporating accessibility improvements, modern systems, and energy-saving upgrades. The restored outbuilding now serves as a live/work space for the property’s scholar-in-residence program, helping ensure this important story continues to be shared with future generations.

May is ! We’re highlighting the restoration of Logan Elementary School, built in Columbia, South Carolina in 1913.

As the surrounding Elmwood neighborhood experienced revitalization, this historic school was thoughtfully transformed into a modern flagship learning environment while preserving the character and integrity that made it so meaningful to the community. The project not only extended the life of a beloved historic landmark, but also helped spark renewed investment in the surrounding neighborhood for generations to come.

May is ! At the University of South Carolina, Hamilton College was thoughtfully renovated to support the College of Social Work while honoring its 1943 origins. Built during WWII, the building provided a much-needed facility for military training and then went on to serve as Naval ROTC training space. After the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the building was damaged during student unrest. It continued to serve the university as classroom and event space until BOUDREAUX transformed the building into dynamic academic space, with additional upgrades and a new courtyard enhancing connection to campus.

Recognized with a 2016 Historic Columbia Foundation Award, the project reflects a balance of preservation and progress.
