Pendant lights are one of those details that make or break a kitchen. Here’s the rule of thumb: 30-36” above your countertop, measured from the bottom of the fixture to the counter surface. Over a dining table, same range, just measure to the tabletop instead.

A few things to keep in mind:
- Adjust based on ceiling height, taller ceilings can push toward the higher end
- If you’re hanging multiple pendants over an island, keep the spacing even and consider the scale of the fixture
- Always double check sightlines, you don’t want to be staring at a pendant across the table

Save this one for when you’re finally tackling that lighting project.

5 things i don’t do as an interior designer

different lighting temperatures in the same space. nothing throws off a room faster than warm and cool bulbs fighting each other

a rug that’s too small. floating furniture on a tiny rug is the #1 thing i fix in other people’s homes

finishes without seeing actual physical samples first. a screen will lie to you every time

trends. i design for how you’ll live in the space five years from now, not what’s on my feed this week

the big ceiling light. layered lighting is the difference between a room that photographs well and one that actually feels good

pendant sizing over an island isn’t just a guess

the go-to formula: add the length + width of your island in inches, that number in inches roughly equals the total diameter you want your pendants (combined) to cover

but formulas are a starting point, not a rule. sometimes a larger scale linear chandelier makes a bigger statement than a row of pendants. sometimes a few small flush mounts read cleaner if your ceilings are lower or your island is more of a prep zone than a hangout spot

the real answer: know the rule, then trust your eye
