About Charlene ‘Char’ Jendry’s East Africa Collection:

In the early 1980s, Char joined the remarkably successful Docent Association Program at the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium. Under the directorship of Jack Hanna, the Zoo was becoming a leader in educational outreach, habitat awareness, and conservation, connecting the care of animals in captivity with a larger understanding of their lives in the wild. The Columbus Zoo fostered a culture of exploration and innovation, developing enrichment programs and encouraging hands-off observation to better understand—and ultimately improve—the lives and well-being of its animals.

During one of her docent shifts, Char had a profound eye-to-eye encounter with Oscar, a lowland mountain gorilla. Something about that moment stayed with her. From that day forward, Char was captivated by gorillas.

She began working closely with the women keepers in the Gorilla House, becoming deeply involved in their demanding efforts to establish innovative animal-enrichment programs designed to improve the health and well-being of the gorillas. The programs developed during this period proved extraordinarily successful, contributing to dramatic increases in breeding success and attracting international attention. The work opened doors to connections with zoos, researchers, and conservationists around the world.

During a book tour, Dian Fossey extended her stay in Columbus to spend time with the Gorilla House keepers, sharing ideas and discussing the complex relationship between conservation, animal health, and the well-being of gorillas living in a zoo environment. For Char, these experiences continued to deepen a commitment that would shape the rest of her life.

In the 1990s, Char was selected as the first participant in a zoo-keeper internship program at the Karisoke Research Center in Rwanda, Africa. She became the first—and ultimately the only—participant in the program, which was discontinued as political conflict and the pre-genocide war made continued participation impossible.

Char returned from Rwanda with a profound understanding that humanitarian work and conservation were inseparable. She returned year after year, for decades, traveling to communities throughout Rwanda and developing lasting friendships with people whose lives were intertwined with conservation, community, and sustainable economic development. Just as important to Char was the work of the artists she encountered along the way.

Her devotion to artists and to the artistic process became a cornerstone of her time in Africa. From 1990 through 2015, Char spent countless hours with many of the artists represented in this collection. She was endlessly fascinated by how they worked—their ideas, techniques, influences, and the ways their lives and circumstances shaped their art. She returned to the same artists year after year, always eager to see what had changed, what they were creating, and why.

The collection assembled by Char is therefore much more than a collection of beautiful and remarkable objects. Much of it was personally selected by her and carried home from East Africa to Columbus, Ohio. Each piece represents not only an artist’s creative vision, but also a relationship, a place, and a moment in time.

Char’s commitment to holistic conservation was inseparable from her passion for these artists. The artists themselves—their families, their hopes, their struggles, their successes, and their dreams—mattered to her as much as, and perhaps sometimes more than, the extraordinary works they created.

This collection is a reflection of that belief. It tells the story of a woman whose curiosity began with a gorilla at the Columbus Zoo and grew into a lifelong commitment to conservation, community, and the people and artists of Rwanda and East Africa. Above all, it reflects Char’s remarkable ability to see the connection between protecting the natural world, supporting human communities, and honoring the creative spirit of the people who called those places home.

Vision & Vasari is honored to present the Estate of Charlene Jendry, an extraordinary collection shaped by a life of curiosity, compassion, adventure, and a profound connection to people, animals, and cultures around the world.

Charlene’s remarkable journey took her from the Columbus Zoo to the mountains of Rwanda. In 1991, she became the first zookeeper selected by the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International to participate in its gorilla field research internship program. She spent six months at the Karisoke Research Center in the Virunga Mountains, observing mountain gorilla families and forming lasting relationships with local trackers.

Her experience in Rwanda became a defining chapter of her life. Charlene went on to help co-found Partners In Conservation at the Columbus Zoo, where she played an important role in advancing mountain gorilla conservation while supporting education, healthcare, sustainable livelihoods, and communities in Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Her connection to Rwanda continued for more than three decades.

Among the most meaningful elements of her estate is her collection of African artwork and objects, reflecting her lifelong relationship with Rwanda and her deep appreciation for its people, traditions, artistry, and culture. The collection includes an intriguing array of artwork, textiles, baskets, carvings, pottery and objects gathered and cherished throughout her years of connection to Africa.

Charlene is remembered for her infectious laugh, warmth, courage, curiosity, and extraordinary ability to connect with people across cultures and communities. Her life was a testament to the belief that one person can make a difference.
