Three years later, we remember the profound impact of October 7, 2023 on Israel and Jewish communities around the world. We carry the memory of those who were murdered, honor the resilience of those who survived, and reaffirm our commitment to the Israeli people and to a strong Jewish future. This Simchat Torah will feel different.

For the first time since October 7, we’ll celebrate knowing that all the hostages have come home.

There will still be grief. There will still be memories. And there will be joy, too.

We’ll hold the Torahs a little closer and remember what it means to carry a tradition that has endured through so much.

They don’t have to be the same to belong together. In fact, it’s their differences that make the whole more meaningful.

Sukkot reminds us that Jewish life has room for all of our stories, traditions, and experiences. We each bring something of our own, and together, we create connection, community and a place where everyone can belong.

This year, we mark 25 years since September 11, 2001, a day that changed our country and left a lasting mark on so many lives. That anniversary falls alongside the beginning of Rosh Hashanah, a time when we pause, remember, reflect and consider how we want to show up in the year ahead. May this convergence remind us of the fragility of life, the importance of caring for one another, and our shared responsibility to choose hope, connection, and community.
