The floating home..!
Who lives in a house like this.?
Built in 2008, Tanglewood 2 is the Massachusetts home of architect Warren Schwartz.
Inspired by a Grand Canyon trip, Warren Schwartz set out to design a house that would let its occupants ‘inhabit’ the view. His solution was radical: to lift part of the house entirely off the ground.
Tanglewood 2 is a single-storey pavilion tucked within six acres of woodland and meadow in a clearing among the trees. Its 45ft cantilever projects dramatically over the sloping terrain. The front door is at the rear, where the house meets the ground, and a spacious hallway leads to three bedroom suites before opening into the elevated heart of the home: a light-filled, open-plan ‘sky room’ (below). Here, kitchen, dining and living spaces culminate in a wall of glass framing spectacular, uninterrupted views across the Berkshire Hills.
The house is steel framed, with an 11cm-thick concrete and steel-deck roof and floor structure. The exterior is clad in corrugated aluminium and glazed aluminium window framing, which reinforces a sense of weightlessness. The interiors are finished in plaster, with sealed concrete floors and translucent glass panels and doors set along the corridor.
Tanglewood 2 is the second home Schwartz has designed for himself and his wife, Boston Symphony Orchestra violinist Sheila Fiekowsky and is where they spend their summers.
Fabulous Architecture.
