I’ve turned many Ice Cream Scoops and even more Pizza Wheels, but always to sell or gift - and here we were using the store bought models with plastics handles (not that there’s anything wrong with that, but if I make these, why not use them ourselves too?).
These two are made of Marblewood - a wood that comes from Northern South America. Most things I turn are from local Kentucky or Tennessee Hardwoods, but I do have a supplier for my Exotic Hardwoods. Generally, things turned from Exotic Hardwoods are a little more expensive and I do have some really awesome local hardwoods. I had forgotten how hard Marblewood was to turn, not difficult, but the wood is very hard and dulls the tools quickly.

Got to experience making my first cane this past week. Took a lot of research and planning to do this as I wanted to turn a sturdy cane and add a few of my signature designs. My large lathe is still down so I had to turn the shaft as a two piece.
It’s made from sturdy walnut. The shaft is pieced together with a 4 1/2” threaded rod and my transition is a 1/8” bronze washer. Same for the transition at the top with the handle and shaft. The handle was made from a combination of scroll saw, router, and shaping with the belt sander. Took the second handle to get one that pleased me. Some bass guitar string burning and some laser engraving for personalization. First time using Wipe-on Poly, but it was a highly recommended finish for the piece. 1 1/4” shaft tapering to 1” at the bottom. Thanks for trusting me to this special project.

I had the honor of being asked to create some wood medallions with the BlueGrass Bash logo burned on them. I actually turned them on the lathe. They are 1/2” thick and approx. 3 1/4” in diam. I’ve added a few tricks to my turning now. I used poplar and stained with Minwax Pecan. I am always open to special project attempts. Please let me know your needs.
