A hotel room was designed. Your house accumulated. That's the whole difference.

Every single thing in that hotel room was chosen by someone, deliberately, in relation to everything else in the room. Your house happened over fifteen years. 🏨

A sofa bought in one decade. A rug that came from a different house. Art that was a gift. A lamp that was on sale. Every one of those decisions was reasonable on its own, and none of them were made in relation to each other. That is why the room feels off, and it has nothing to do with what you spent.

The smaller the room, the bigger the mirror. Most people do the exact opposite.

In a small space a mirror is doing structural work. It's borrowing light and depth. A large one does that job. A small decorative one just becomes another object on an already crowded wall. 🪞

In a large room the math reverses. There's already light and depth in the space, so the mirror gets to be decorative, interesting, sculptural. Scale it to the job you need it to do, not to the wall it's going on.

A wall of small frames doesn't fill a small room. It chops it up.

Every frame edge is a stopping point for your eye. Put nine of them on one wall and the eye stops nine times. That reads as busy, and busy makes the wall feel closer than it actually is. 🖼️

One large piece gives the eye a single place to land, and the wall reads as one uninterrupted plane. The same logic applies to rugs. Small room, big rug, not a postage stamp floating in the middle of the floor.

Painting a small room white is making it smaller. Here's what actually works.

Everyone gives you the same advice about small rooms: keep it light, keep it white. 🎨

White walls put every corner and edge on full display, which tells your eye exactly where the boundaries are. Dark color does the opposite. It blurs the corners, the walls recede, and the room reads bigger than it measures. Hotels have used this for decades in rooms far smaller than yours.
