Litha, also known as Midsummer or the Summer Solstice, is one of the eight Sabbats of the Wheel of the Year. It celebrates the Sun God at the height of his power, when light reigns supreme and the Earth is bursting with life, abundance, and fertility.
Ancient peoples gathered on hilltops to watch the sunrise, lit great bonfires to honor the Sun, and danced through the night to bless their crops and communities. In many European traditions, it was believed that the veil between the human world and the realm of spirits and faeries grew thin on Midsummer Eve, making it a powerful night for magic, divination, and enchantment.
The word solstice comes from the Latin solstitium, meaning “the Sun stands still.” Ancient observers noticed that the Sun appeared to pause in its journey across the horizon before slowly beginning its return southward.
