Café Au Lait - Crumble Cake Spinny Winny

Leftovers from a “Special Edition” blend for a charity auction benefiting K9’s for Warriors.

These cakes are a play on the WhoDat Pipe Works signature blend “Cajun Coffee.” These cakes are presented in a layered format - the original Cajun Coffee covered in a layer of a sweet cream inspired blend. These cakes will need some drying time. Spinny Winny will be held when all spots are full.

I have some components left over for the Special Edition Auction Blend - “Cafe Aú Lait” and was going to make a couple more crumble cakes (probably 2) that I was thinking about waffling off.

First “Cafe Aú Lait” crumble cake out of the press and into a vacuum bag. Two of these 8oz cakes will be going to fellow craft blenders; Jon Harrison (The Ridge Pipe To***co) and Dan Armstrong (Reiver Pipes & To***co) for their K9's for Warriors charity auction in November.

These crumble cakes are a play on our WhoDat Pipe Works signature blend "Cajun Coffee." The original “Cajun Coffee” blend covered in a layer of a sweet cream inspired blend.

So I’m curious; was it this blend that no one was interested in? Or is it our blends in general? Sales have been slowing down on the last few releases and I’d like to know if there is something we need to do differently.

Whodat-Sweet Tea

WhoDat cracked open the iced tea on the porch, but this ain't your grandma's Lipton.

Blend Breakdown: Virginia, Burley, Black & Red Cavendish, Orientals, and a dash of Perique — topped with a black tea reduction / syrup flavored with honey, citrus, and Jameson Orange.

Tin Note: Jam. Orange marmalade sweet notes right up front, sticky and bright, with a sweet tea tannic finish underneath. Not your typical sweet tea — more jam jar than tea jug. Like sweet tea and the remembrance of this mornings warm buttermilk biscuit and orange marmalade.

Pipe Note: The base leaf recipe is solid enough to stand on its own — really good combination, the way each varietal plays on the other. Slightly sweet after that Burley nut flavor kicks in, with some bright and slightly sour notes from the Perique and Orientals winking in and out.

The topping? The sweet tea is more tannic than tea, more like the essence thereof. Not a sugar bomb, more like you licked the tannin off the tea leaf itself, with that honey-citrus-Jameson Orange hanging in the background like a porch breeze.

Not an all-day goopy aro — it's a proper blend that happens to be wearing sweet tea cologne.

So my friends and fellow craft blenders; Jon Harrison (The Ridge Pipe To***co) and Dan Armstrong (Reiver Pipes & To***co) asked me if I’d be willing to donate to a charity auction they are hosting for K9’s for Warriors. Of course I said yes!

I’ll be donating a hand carved Ahment Gövem Meerschaum Pipe and a special blend made just for this event - Café Au Lait Cake.

This blend is a play on our WhoDat Pipe Works signature blend “Cajun Coffee.” We are donating two - 8 oz pressed cakes presented in a layered format - the original Cajun Coffee covered in a layer of a sweet cream inspired blend.
