I love this design! My cousin requested a Tim Burton-styled pig with a floral background. It was a challenge. I researched on Tim Burton's art style and did my best to match it on a pig character! I really love the pig I designed, so I added wilting flowers as a second backdrop.

Hi! I'm Shuazong and these are my artist resolutions for this upcoming year.

1. Make more traditional art - work more with gouache and alcohol markers.

2. Post more and consistently!

3. Complete illustrations and comics. I work on art year round but it's either incomplete or I don't post - this is definitely something I want to work on.

4. Art/Craft Fair!! I've been in one and I want to join another and see how it goes!

5. Continue on digital art and animation. I have so many goals this year. I should maybe trim it down, but another goal is to continue on digital art and try out animation through Procreate.

6. Redraw/revamp old work!

One of my most favorite parts in illustrating The Chirps in Gao Hong's P**a would be drawing the chickens. At first I drew chickens and chicks the way I've seen them at local farms and the zoo, but learned that my research fell short. I was reminded that I needed to look beyond my home and at Gao Hong's own childhood home and culture.

I researched Chinese Silkies and drawings of chickens, quickly falling in love with these designs. It looked simple but it wasn't. There is a complexity behind the strong lines and the soft colors and shading. I truly enjoyed finding ways to put in as many chickens and chicks throughout the book.

It's been a while but I plan on being more consistent. Quite a bit of stuff have been going on in my life.

Here is a quick character study I worked on for The Chirps in Gao Hong's P**a.

After meeting Gao Hong, I wanted to capture her openness and expressiveness. She is a generally happy woman who emanates kindness and wisdom! I could only imagine an eager and happy little girl until the main plot point to her personal story affected her.

Design sketches and a quick character study of Gao Hong's mother. My goal was to make her look similar yet different and connect Gao Hong and her mother together through their color schemes. I wanted to develop a design that illustrated the Gao Hong's mother's resilience, gentleness, and thoughtfulness. Ultimately, the second design outfits was selected.

These are the initial sketches of a young Gao Hong. I wanted to embody the innocence and joy, especially within the childhood memory of this story that Gao Hong shared. It was fun to think of the character design!

For the past few months, I've been working on illustrating a children's book, The Chirps in Gao Hong's P**a. It's been a great experience, working alongside the author and composer of the book (who this book is about)!

The Chirps in Gao Hong's P**a is a memoir in the form of a children's book. Gao Hong is a Chinese-American p**a artist and Peng Liu Nelson, the author, writes about one of Gao Hong's childhood memory set in the mid-1950's in Luo Yang, China, and how baby chicks continue to inspire her music today. Gao Hong also composed a song to go along with the book!

If you're interested in the book, you can get either a physical copy of the book, or an e-book, with the following links:

For years I've talked about sharing my art and joining an arts and craft show but it wasn't until this past December that I actually joined one, courtesy of my sister-in-law ( Kim). She is a great and creative artist who got me to join the December Collective with her.

It was quite nerve-wracking and I'm pretty sure I was mostly awkward, but I truly enjoyed my time. I would have been happy with one sale yet I met my two personal goals!
