Are Free Standing Tubs worth it?
From a designer’s perspective, they can make a project look stunning and magazine worthy. But since my credo is- “Beautiful design should also be functional design”, I believe that free standing tubs are impractical.

1. Freestanding tubs typically cost more than built-in or drop-in tubs. They also require additional floor space and often involve more complex plumbing or reinforcement particularly when using floor-mounted faucets and drains.
2. Water frequently ends up on the bathroom floor, increasing the risk of slips and long-term moisture damage. Unless you install it inside a larger shower area or a recessed pebbled underlay floor with a drain underneath.
3. Unless the tub is positioned beside a wall, there’s often nowhere convenient to place bath essentials.
4. My biggest concern is SAFETY- Freestanding tubs are generally deeper than standard tubs, requiring a higher step to get in and out. Wet, smooth surfaces can become slippery, and because the tub stands alone and has thin sleek rims, there’s often nothing nearby to hold onto. For older adults, children, or anyone with reduced mobility, esp if you’re aging in place, this can become a genuine safety hazard.
5. Cleaning isn’t as easy as it looks.
Therefore make the decision to invest in one fully informed, understanding both the benefits and the compromises.
Personally, I’d rather invest the budget in features that improve everyday living: like A spacious walk-in shower with multiple shower and spray heads. A generous double vanity with ample storage, and enclosed toilets.
