A hill I will die on: the color of your light bulbs!

You can have the perfect paint color and a beautifully designed room, but the wrong bulbs can make the whole thing feel off.

Stick with 2700K–3000K for that warm, cozy light that makes your home actually FEEL like home.

Bright white bulbs have no place in the home!

One of our favorite things to hear from a client:

“I never would have thought of that.”

Because that's kind of the point! We tell our clients all the time that it's hard to see something differently when you've lived with it this way for so long.

You know your home. You know what you like and what isn't working, but you may not know how to fix it. Our job is to come in with a fresh set of eyes and see possibilities you may not have considered.

Sometimes all it takes is a fresh perspective!

If you have a space you can't quite figure out, we'd love to take a look.

PSA: Your TV is allowed to exist.

We see so many beautiful living rooms online where the TV is either completely hidden or conveniently missing altogether.

But real families watch TV. You don't have to design your living room pretending yours doesn't exist.

The goal isn't always to hide it. It's to make it feel like it belongs there. Think about the size of the TV, what it's sitting above or next to, the scale of everything around it, and what else your eye sees when you walk into the room. And sure, they make beautiful TVs that look like art, but sometimes a TV can just be a TV.

Design for the way you actually live in your house. Your home can be beautiful AND functional.

- From the Design Desk -
People often use the words decorating and designing interchangeably, but they're actually two different things.

Decorating is about making a space look beautiful. Think furniture, rugs, artwork, pillows, accessories, and styling.

Design goes a step further. It's about solving problems before the decorating even begins. We're thinking about layouts, traffic flow, cabinetry, lighting, storage, function, proportions, and how every decision affects the next.

Both are necessary because they serve different purposes! That's why a room can be beautifully decorated but still not function well, or be well-designed but feel unfinished. But when those two things come together... chef's kiss! 🤌

Presentation day is when our clients see the project. The months afterward are when they stop having to think about all the details.

Once the design is approved, our job shifts from creating the vision to bringing it to life. We handle the ordering, keep track of lead times, coordinate with vendors and contractors, answer questions, troubleshoot when something inevitably doesn't go according to plan, and keep all the moving pieces moving.

Could clients manage it themselves? Absolutely.

But for many of our clients, the biggest value isn't the design itself but having someone else carry the mental load so they can enjoy watching their home come together instead of managing every detail.

We're a lot less interested in what's trending this year than we are in what you'll still love ten years from now.

That doesn't mean homes have to feel traditional or boring.

It just means we design around people first, trends second.

TLDR: If you want your home to look like the "after" photos, the design has to be treated as a whole, not a menu to order from.

One of the biggest misconceptions about interior design is that it's simply choosing a bunch of pretty things. It's not.

Every decision we make is connected to another. For example, the flooring influences the cabinetry which influences the countertops which influences the backsplash. One decision leads to another until everything is connected.

The furniture and rugs are selected for the scale of the space. Window treatments soften the room and frame the windows. Lighting changes how the room feels. Hardware is like the jewelry that finishes it off. Then we layer in pillows, lamps, artwork, greenery, and accessories to make the room feel warm, lived in, and complete.

None of those choices are made independently. Every color, material, finish, texture, pattern, and proportion is selected because it supports the overall vision.
When you see a room that just feels right, it's rarely because of one standout piece but because everything is working together.

That's also why making a few seemingly small substitutions throughout the process can completely change the end result. "Can we make the paint just a little brighter?" sounds like a simple request until you realize that paint color was pulled from the curtain fabric, which was selected to complement the sofa, whose wood tone ties into the end tables, while the lamps, artwork, and accessories were all chosen to reinforce that same color palette. Suddenly, what felt like a one item change becomes a domino effect throughout the room.

Our goal isn't to create a shopping list but to give our clients the complete plan, not a menu to order from.

Anyone can buy a beautiful sofa. The value of a designer is knowing which sofa works with which rug, which lighting, which fabrics, which artwork, which accessories, and why.

Follow up question from yesterday's post...

"What's actually included in the Design Phase?"

Every project is different, so every scope of work is customized. A paint consultation won't include the same deliverables as a whole-home renovation, and that's intentional.

Depending on your project, your Design Phase may include things like:

• Mood boards and design concepts
• Space planning and furniture layouts
• 3D renderings to help you visualize the finished space
• Paint, flooring, tile, lighting, plumbing, and finish selections
• Furniture, decor, and styling recommendations
• Material and product sourcing
• Design revisions and final presentations

We'll provide product recommendations with pricing, a proposal for project management if you'd like us to oversee the project, and, when contractor work is involved, we'll do our best to gather estimates so you have a clear picture of the overall investment before construction begins.

Our goal is to eliminate as many surprises as possible by giving you a realistic picture of your project before before any products are ordered or construction begins.
