There was a moment in history when something completely new changed the way luxury objects were made… and this is part of that story.
This casket is crafted from celluloid, one of the very first man-made materials, developed in the late 19th century as an alternative for materials like ivory and tortoiseshell. At the time, it was considered incredibly innovative. It allowed artisans to create intricate, highly decorative pieces that would have otherwise been inaccessible to most.
But what makes this piece so special is how it bridges innovation and luxury.
It was elevated with gilt bronze mounts and fitted as a perfume casket, complete with crystal bottles and hand-painted details. Pieces like this were designed to feel just as refined and indulgent as their traditional counterparts.
Celluloid was beautiful, but it was also fragile and flammable, which means far fewer of these pieces have survived over time. Finding one in this level of detail and condition, especially as a complete casket, is incredible.
A glimpse into a moment when craftsmanship met early innovation, and something entirely new entered the world of decorative arts.
