Implicit in the rainbow is a storm that has passed, leaving behind the simple magic of a rainbow. It cannot be bought or captured, it is by nature spontaneous and ephemeral, ordinary and yet awe-inspiring. The two motifs of the shadow and the rainbow recur often throughout Ungerer’s oeuvre – he loved the graphic contrast between darkness and light, between density and levity.
“Don’t Hope, Cope.” Tomi professed not to believe in hope – and yet we find hope in many of his works and if there is one thing that might give us cause for hope, it is taking action.
Here darkness transforms into light.
