"W" is for Weeping Fig
Ficus Benjamina is a popular evergreen houseplant with arching branches and glossy leaves. Weeping Figs do not like to be move and show their displeasure by dropping leaves. They can reach 100 feet tall in the wilds of Asia and Australia. It is known as the official tree of Bangkok. The distinctive elongated pointy tips of leaves are called drip tips and allows the plant to rapidly shed heavy tropical rains. It has been classified as an air filtering plant because it helps reduce toxins in the air. We have a large pet Weeping Fig at the shop you should stop by and see. It was donated by a customer when it outgrew their home. It loves the tall ceilings in the florist.

"V" is for Violet
African violets are popular indoor flowering plants known for their velvety, fuzzy leaves and cheerful clusters of flowers. Their scientific name is Streptocarpus Ionanthus. It sounds a little like a disease. For over a century they were classified as Saint Paulia Ionanthus. They are critically endangered in the wild. They are native to a very biodiverse region of the Udzungwa Mountains in Kenya and Tanzania. Their natural cloud forest habitats are rapidly disappearing due to intense deforestation.

"U" is for Dwarf Umbrella Plant
The Dwarf Umbrella plant is a more compact version of the Australian Umbrella Tree. The dwarf version or Schefflera Arboricola is native to Taiwan and Hainan and features tighter clustered leaflets. The Dwarf Umbrella plant usually tops out at 6 feet making ideal for homes. There are some interesting varigated varities which are highly sought after by collectors. Even though most people still label them in the Schefflera family, they have recently been reassigned to the Heptapleurum family. Maybe that is why people just go with Umbrella plant.

"T" is for Thanksgiving Cactus
Schlumbergera commonly known as holiday cactus, includes the Thanksgiving Cactus and Christmas Cactus. They are spineless tropical houseplants native to the Brazilian rainforest. The primary difference between the cactus are the shape of their stem segments and their flowering schedule. The Schlumbergera Truncata (Thanksgiving Cactus) features claw-like teeth or pointed projections on each leaf segment. Most holiday cactus sold in stores are Thanksgiving Cactus because they are hardier. Because the cactus is native to the Southern hemisphere, they tend to bloom around May in the wild. They can live a very long time. We have one at the shop from the 1960s, the same decade the florist opened.
