Comma Projects wanted the living room at Zoei to stay calm, with the fireplace as the hero of it.

A behind the scenes look at the design process, and what she was after when she went looking for a fireplace.

Plenty of houses have a fireplace that hasn't been lit in years.

Our VB2 burner sits in the existing grate and turns it back into a working fireplace. The chimney doesn't need to be operational, and there's no firewood to store or ash to clean up after.

Fireplaces are generally located in the room where people naturally gather.

Which leaves out the reading room, the study, or that one cosy nook where you like to spend a bit of quiet time in. A bioethanol burner doesn't need a chimney or a flue, so it can go in any of those rooms just as easily, which is often the difference between a room you keep meaning to use and one you actually want to spend time in.

Vertigo is a fireplace at coffee table height.

Low-set and square, the Vertigo Series works better in the middle of a space than against a wall or off at the edge. The concrete top is wide enough to use as a table, and an optional glass cover plate can be used over the burner when it isn't lit, turning it into a full table.

Every fireplace we make is designed to be built in or built around.

There's no set surround, so the materials that meet it are yours to choose, and those surfaces end up carrying the material language of the space. They're also what you're looking at when nothing is lit.

Injidup Spa Retreat has just ten villas along a secluded stretch of Western Australian coast. Every detail there is considered before it's chosen.

Our fire sits in the main lounge, setting the mood for evenings that stretch long after the sun goes down.

People imagine a fireplace means smoke, mess and a lot of upkeep.

A bioethanol one doesn't. No trades, no gas line, no annual service call. Just a bottle, a jerry can, and a few minutes every so often to keep it going.

See how Kim McGann tops hers up.

Most fire features add trades and delays to a build. A feature wall usually means a chimney, a gas run, or venting to plan around.

The Frame Series doesn't. Prepare the opening, fix the mounting frame, slide the fireplace in. No flue, no gas connection, no electricity, just a clean-burning real flame built into the wall.

Fewer trades on site, a tighter build programme, and a finished feature that looks like it was always part of the architecture.

The best evenings are the those that don't need to be filled.

No music, no plans. Just a fire going in a room that makes silence feel like enough.
