A call to action for downtown Business owner,
Hopefully you've heard on the radio, read in the newspaper are on social media about Let's Beautify Cumberland and County United Way working to bring back the Memorial Day parade here in downtown Cumberland. The parade and community ceremony is planned to take place on the morning of Monday, May 26th, Memorial Day around 10:30a.m. with the parade beginning shortly after the ceremony honoring our community veterans. This event is also being co-sponsored by downtown businesses Cumberland Times-News and WCBC Radio.
A special event permit has been submitted to the city to operate the parade down Washington Street to Baltimore Street and conclude at Queen City Drive. The event planners intend to have everything wrapped up by noon. The city of Cumberland is presently denying the request to close Baltimore Street for this event and is considering other options. Recently Cumberland Mayor, Ray Morris was on WCBC radio and stated that he was not aware of any business in downtown Cumberland in support of this parade. I'm writing to ask that you please take some time out of your day and send the Mayor and City Council members a brief email expressing your support for a Memorial Day parade in downtown Cumberland. In years past the Memorial Day/ Damper Dan parade had a large turnout with community support and it's the hope of the event organizers to reestablish this lost tradition and bring it back to our new reimagined downtown Cumberland. The initial parade estimates is between 250 to 500 residents to attend the event that morning.
This event is being coordinated by volunteers of Let's Beautify Cumberland. If you'd like additional information about the parade and are you have an organization that would like to participate your encouraged to contact Ed Mullaney, Co-chair and/or Chris Myers, Event Coordinator with Let's Beautify Cumberland.
For your convenience we have included the email addresses of the city leaders.
Mayor, Raymond Morriss [email protected]
