After an incredible week-long getaway celebrating our friends marriage (congrats to the Barsby's 😘), we returned to the shop feeling refreshed, inspired, and ready to create!

It’s been a busy first week back. We hit the ground running with a few floral subscriptions, a stunning large-scale sympathy tribute, numerous dance recital bouquets, and a few birthday arrangements.

We’re extremely grateful for the opportunity to help our customers celebrate all of life’s special moments here at Walnut St. Flowers!

The Sensitive Plant (Mimosa Pudica) gets its name from its fascinating ability to fold its leaves inward and droop when touched, shaken, or exposed to heat. This rapid defense mechanism, known as thigmonasty, is thought to protect the plant by startling hungry herbivores and exposing hidden thorns. Beyond its shy nature, here are a few more fun facts about this quirky botanical wonder.

It "Sleeps" at Night: The sensitive plant exhibits nyctinastic movements—a fancy botanical term meaning the foliage folds up during darkness and reopens when exposed to light.

It Has Many Nicknames: Because of its unique behaviors, it goes by a variety of colorful aliases, including the shy plant, humble plant, touch-me-not, sleepy plant, and shame plant.

No Muscles Required: The plant moves without any muscles or nervous system! Instead, it relies on hydraulic pressure. When disturbed, the plant releases chemicals that force water rapidly out of its cells, causing the leaves to instantly go limp.

Fluffy Pom-Pom Blooms: It isn't just known for its moving leaves; during the summer, the plant produces beautiful, globular flowers that look like tiny, fluffy pink or lilac dandelions.

It Can Be a Troublemaker: While popular as an indoor novelty, in tropical and subtropical regions across the globe, it grows so fast that it is considered an invasive w**d that can crowd out agricultural crops.

It Takes Energy to React: Opening and closing its leaves takes a toll on the plant's energy reserves. If you play with it too much, you can actually exhaust it.

Beginning Tuesday, June 9th we will be reducing our store hours for the entirety of Summer Break to spend more quality time with our kids! It is officially our oldest's last Summer Break and we would like to do all the fun things with them!

New hours will be OPEN Tuesdays through Fridays 11am-3pm, and By Appointment Only on Saturdays, CLOSED Sundays and Mondays!

As always, if our hours do not work for you we are always willing to set up a scheduled time to meet, including after set store hours!

Thank you all so much for understanding!

There are still 4 extra large (extra special) floral arrangements, and also 2 smaller Flowers + Drink combo carriers left over in the cooler. Please call or text (515.992.3266) as soon as possible if you are interested! Willing to meet at the shop on Sunday or deliver locally (Dallas Center, Grimes, Adel, Waukee)! Will entertain price negotiations as I hate to see them go to waste.
