This is the #1 mistake people make with Flooring Skipping the subfloor prep. 🛑👇

If you want your floors to look last for decades, you can’t just “lay and pray.” Your floor is only as good as what’s underneath it.

Why subfloor prep is non-negotiable:

No More “Click-Clack”: A level surface prevents that annoying bouncing or hollow sound when you walk.

Prevent Floor Failure: Proper moisture testing and barriers stop mold and adhesive failure before they start.

Save Your Warranty: Most flooring warranties are VOID if the subfloor wasn’t prepped to spec. 💸

Seamless Finish: Eliminating bumps and dips ensures your planks sit perfectly flush for that high-end look.

What you need to check for every time:
✅ Surface cleanliness (no debris!)
✅ Moisture levels
✅ Levelness (grinding high spots/filling low spots)
✅ Smoothness

Don’t let a “quick install” turn into an expensive replacement next year. Do it right the first time.

Before you pull the trigger on Herringbone or Chevron, you need to know where these patterns actually belong. We love these designs—they’re high-end and timeless—but the biggest mistake we see is people forcing them into the wrong rooms.

The truth is, not every space is meant for these patterns. If you try to cram a Herringbone into a tiny galley kitchen or a narrow hallway, you are going to ruin the visual. Instead of looking luxury, it creates way too much “noise” that makes a small space feel even smaller and more cluttered.

To actually see the beauty of a Chevron or Herringbone floor, the design needs room to breathe. You need the scale of a large living room or an open dining area to let those long, repetitive lines lead the eye and show off the full geometry.

Stop shrinking your rooms by forcing a complex layout into a tight spot. If you want that designer look, save the patterns for the big spaces and let the floor actually be the art

You can buy the most expensive flooring on the market, but if you ignore the finishing touches, it’s still going to look like a budget job. 🛑

If you’re planning a renovation, watch out for these 4 “value killers”:

1️⃣ The “Quarter Round” Cop-out: Nothing screams “rushed job” like white plastic quarter round nailed over your baseboards. It collects dust and hides the floor. The Pro Move: Pull the baseboards and install the flooring underneath them for a custom, built-in look.

2️⃣ The Transition Trap: Stop using those generic metal strips or “close enough” T-moldings. If it doesn’t perfectly match your plank, it breaks the flow of the house and looks like an afterthought.

3️⃣ The “Stair Cap” Fail: Using overlapping stair nosing (the kind with a lip) instead of flush-mount nosing. A flush finish is the difference between a high-end custom staircase and a DIY kit.

4️⃣The “Natural” Layout: Even the best SPC or laminate has a pattern repeat. If you don’t take the time to separate the planks and randomize the layout during installation, you’ll end up with “twin” boards next to each other. A pro layout looks natural; a cheap one looks like a photocopy.

The Bottom Line: Your project is only as good as the last 5% of the work. Don’t let the details tank your investment.

Which of these is a dealbreaker for you? Let’s talk in the comments! 👇

Choosing a floor is about more than just the surface. What’s underneath the core determines how that floor will perform in your home.

From 100% Solid Hardwood to the rigid stone composite of SPC, each layer serves a specific purpose for durability, moisture resistance, and stability.

The Stack:

Solid Hardwood: Traditional solid wood.

Engineered Hardwood: Layered plywood for stability.

Laminate: Durable HDF (High-Density Fiberboard).

WPC: Waterproof wood plastic composite.

SPC: Rigid stone plastic composite.

Which core fits your next project? Let us know in the comments.

It’s not what you think

Laminate flooring is coming back and here’s why

If you’re still picturing that peeling, clicky floor from the 90s, you’re missing the biggest tech shift in flooring. We’ve been watching this develop, and the “secret” is all in the core: CARB 2 Black HDF.
Standard laminate used a soft, tan particle board that soaked up water like a sponge. This new Black HDF is a high-density fiberboard infused with moisture-resistant resins and wax. It’s denser, heavier, and gives you that solid “thud” underfoot that used to only come with real hardwood.
Is it actually waterproof? The surface armor and the ultra-tight locking systems mean these floors are now rated for 72+ hours of spill protection. You’re getting:
* Commercial-grade scratch resistance
* Water-safe peace of mind
* The warmth of a wood-based product
At Portofino Flooring, we’re leaning heavily into this for our 2026 collections because it’s finally a practical, high-end alternative to LVP.
Stop buying the old stuff. If you want to see what the new Black HDF looks like in person, hit the link in our bio or drop a comment with “SAMPLES” and I’ll get you the details. 👊

Here’s why we say NO:

It’s a Dirt Magnet: Grout lines are essentially trenches for dirt, spills, and bacteria. You’ll spend more time scrubbing those lines than enjoying your kitchen.

The “Back-Breaker”: Tile has zero “give.” It’s hard, it’s cold, and standing on it while you cook is brutal on your joints.

The Skating Rink: One spill and your kitchen becomes a safety hazard. Tile is notoriously slippery when wet.

Noise & Cost: It’s loud, it echoes, and the labor for a high-quality tile install is astronomical compared to the alternatives.

The Solution? Go with SPC Vinyl. ✅

You get the 100% waterproof protection and the high-end look without the physical pain or the cleaning nightmare. It’s warmer, quieter, and significantly more durable for a busy home.

Stop paying for a floor that works against you

White risers are nice, but they can hide the beauty and character of your hardwood flooring.

Most people can name oak. But can you name all of these? 👇 Drop your score in the comments - How many did you get?

I see people do this every day thinking it’s the “cleaner” way to install. They run the vinyl floor wall-to-wall and then drop the cabinets on top. Big mistake.

The Physics:
Remember, LVP is a floating floor. It isn’t glued or nailed to the subfloor. When you put thousands of pounds of cabinets and stone countertops on top of it, that massive weight creates a “pinch point.”

Because the floor isn’t secured to the ground, that downward pressure forces the rest of the floor to react. The result? Buckling. You’re literally squishing the floor until it has no choice but to pop up at the seams.

The Pro Solution (The “Flush Finish” Hack):
You don’t have to settle for ugly gaps or bulky trim to do this right. Here is how you get that high-end look without ruining your investment:

Cabinets First: Set your cabinets directly onto the subfloor.

Pop the Toe Kicks: Take those thin strips off the bottom of the cabinets.

The Slide: Run your flooring just slightly under the cabinet edge.

The Finish: Re-install your toe kicks on top of the flooring.

The Result: You get a perfectly flush, seamless transition between your cabinets and your floor, and your floor stays flat because it’s not being crushed by 1,000 lbs of granite.

Stop wasting money on installs that are doomed to fail. Do it right the first time.
