1895 S.S. White Portable Military Field Dentist Chair with Case
Steel, Canvas, Leather, Wood
A stunning and rare portable military field dental chair from 1895 by the S.S. White Dental Manufacturing Company.
It is made of cast iron and steel poles that can be assembled and disassembled with little effort to build the frame. There are canvas seat and back areas that connect, along with a wood and canvas headrest. Everything will come fully disassembled, where it fits snuggly and perfectly into the original wooden case. The case measures approximately 40" x 13". It has different compartments to hold some of the smaller pieces.
Please note the base of the wooden case is in good condition. The lid is missing. The lid for nearly all of these has been destroyed because it is used as the foot rest. As you can imagine, most of these have been snapped by uncomfortable patients. It is still very rare that most of the case is still in tact and available with the chair. The case has metal carrying handles and is stamped with the item number, ITEM-51450.
This chair helped revolutionize field dentistry by allowing a proper chair that was adjustable to fit patient's size, easy enough to carry and transport to different areas of the battlefield where it was needed most, then set up using standard parts in a reasonable amount of time. Prior to this time (think Civil War), army field dentistry was done in a dirty and brutal fashion in the mud or sitting against whatever was available, especially if a soldier suffered trauma to the face. The Army had dentist chairs, but these were so large that they had to be kept in garrison far from those who needed critical treatment could access.
By bringing this chair to the front, it allowed a more professional level of service to the patient, no doubt saving many lives from infection or blood loss. Indeed having chairs such as these available are part of the motivation for the military to form the Dental Corps in 1911.
This chair was used by the U.S. Army in the First World War. It is shocking to imagine some of the terrible events that have unfolded in it by the troops fighting from the trenches and the heroism performed by Army dentists on men torn apart from the brutality of that war.
Simply put, this dentist chair is an exceptional piece of both dental and world history.
This chair is made from steel and heavy duty corduroyed canvas.
S.S. White was founded in 1844 in Philadelphia and is still in operation today producing dental equipment.
Also included is a recreated printout of the original patent from 1895 with the complete description of the chair and diagrams of it's original design. US538407.
