In early 19th century France, a socialite by the name of Madame Recamier famously hosted the political, literary, and artistic leaders of Paris at her salon while lounging on a Greco-Roman inspired sofa. She was so influential that the style of sofa she reclined on while receiving and conversing with her guests became known as a “Recamier” and was popularized throughout Europe. The fashion for the Recamier form with its single elevated arm and stationary half-back (as shown here with an ebonized finish c.1815) was particularly fashionable in the English Regency period.
