Expanding the "poorman's" pen series: No glitz, no glam, no polished chrome or expensive kits, just hardwood from Nebraska, Slippery Elm in this case. These use the innards of Bic Clic pens.

Just recently had an appendectomy so I'm out of the studio for a bit: time for a bit of reflection... I've been reading Finding the Mother Tree by Dr. Suzzane Simard. Great read if you are a wood worker interested in more than just the end product off the lathe. We recently had significant damage to cherished Ash and Hackberry trees. One might say,"no particular loss" But these are trees that have grown with us since we have lived here. They have sheltered and attracted birds to our feeders and signal the coming and passing of seasons. So, yes, I feel the loss. Walking through the yard, there are old dead branches down as well and these are seasoned ready to turn into something small to commemorate the tree. Most might haul it off to the tree dump or burn pile. I say, make a desk pen and base for someone to use. (Other set is of Mulberry and Oak combined in both base and pen.)

Working on the affordable pen idea for the upcoming Junk Jaunt in September. These are designed as desk sets, pen and matching base. A steel washer is inlayed in the bottom of the base for stability.

With the September Junk Jaunt event approaching, I've been making pencil cups and wood pens to include with them. This cup is laminated Oak colored with cobalt acetate. I like the effect on oak, makes a sort of patina look. The top portion is a bit of Elm that does not react with the cobalt acetate.

I live in a frugal. bargain oriented market so I'm always looking for ways to have fun on the lathe with small ticket items. Enter, the simple pen, made of oak, using the standard Bic stick pen parts and a simple friction cap. It can be included with a pencil cup purchase or sold for a song. Its a fun lathe project using scrap that might otherwise be tossed.

Slippery Elm: Similar in appearance to Ash, strong, nice to turn, but more split resistant. Trinket box with Resin. Re-designed utility billie... 5/16 steel rod through the handle with lanyard hole and glass breaker. 5/8 steel ballast in the head. Sized for glove box or center console.

Recently completed oak pot and silk flower vase of oak, maple, Hackberry and Honey Locust.

Oak utensil, walnut multi-driver, Honey locust/Oak cup w/resin top. The oak has been treated with iron sulfate solution for the color.

The two other pencil cups sold immediately and my wife had wanted one of them, so I make this one for her. Two layers each of Burr oak and Hackberry and one layer of Honey Locust. If you have an intact pith with no cracks and can turn down to it, you get that nifty figure eight pattern.

I dug around in the shed and found one more piece of Magnolia with the bark attached so I could turn a live edge bowl. I wish I had more. The other piece is laminated mulberry with a black resin top for a pencil cup.
