Before you reach for a can of stain, take a good look at what’s already in front of you.

Wood isn’t a blank canvas. It’s already bringing color to the project.

Warm? Cool? Red? Orange? Yellow?

Understanding your starting point is the first step toward getting the color you actually want.

I call it Step Zero.

Here’s my question: What’s the hardest wood species for you to color match?

I’m curious to hear what gives everyone trouble.

What shop chore do you ALWAYS put off until tomorrow?

I’ll go first.

Cleaning my spray gun.

I love spraying finishes. I absolutely hate cleaning the equipment afterward.

But I’ve learned that the chores I enjoy the least are often the ones that matter most.

A clean gun today means one less problem tomorrow.

Better habits. Better results.

Your turn. Vent about your least favorite shop chore in the comments. No judgment here.

Sometimes the color you’re trying to achieve requires adding a color you wouldn’t expect.

This piece was just a little too red compared to our target sample.

Rather than stripping it back or starting over, I added a small amount of green to my toner and sprayed a corrective coat.

Why green?

Because red and green are complementary colors. Used carefully, green can neutralize excessive red and help bring the finish toward a more balanced brown.

The key is understanding the color you have, the color you want, and the adjustment needed to get there.

Color matching isn’t always about adding more brown. Sometimes it’s about removing the influence of a color that’s already there.

Have you ever used a complementary color to correct a wood finish?

Raw wood is lying to you!

Before you start building color, you need to know what you’re starting with.

Finish brings out the natural color and character already hiding in the wood. What you see raw isn’t necessarily what you’ll see finished.

FROM THE BENCH: I use a simple 60/40 mixture of water to denatured alcohol to preview the natural color and grain before finishing.

It’s a small test that can make a big difference in your color decisions.

Find your starting point before you choose your destination.

Raw wood is lying to you.

What you see before finishing isn’t necessarily what you’re going to get.

Finish doesn’t create the color. It brings out what’s already there.

PRO TIP: Before committing to a finish, I use a 60/40 mixture of water to denatured alcohol to get a preview of how the natural color and grain will come to life.

Know your starting point before you start building color.

A five-cent piece of wax paper can save you a whole lot of aggravation.

When I’m gluing blocks over a repair, wax paper creates a simple barrier that keeps the block from becoming part of the project. Cheap, easy, and always within reach.

Sometimes the best shop tricks aren’t complicated. They just make the next step easier.

Bondo doesn’t ruin furniture. Bad repairs do.

It’s not the right material for every repair—but neither is anything else.

The real skill isn’t knowing what to use.
It’s knowing when to use it.

I’ve used Bondo in the restoration shop for years. Colorable, workable, durable, inexpensive—and in the right situation, it does exactly what I need it to do.

Team Bondo!

Woodworkers love to hate Bondo.

I don’t.

It’s inexpensive, durable, easy to shape, and I can tint it to give the repair a head start toward the final color.

Is it the right filler for every repair? Absolutely not.

But after 26 years at the bench, I’ve learned something: the best material is the one that solves the problem in front of you.

Call me Team Bondo. 😂
