As September 3rd marks , we’ll focus on an unusual historic skyscraper event.

The Spitzer Building was the first steel framed high-rise in Toledo and in the fervor for hydrogen airships following the 1904 World’s Fair in St Louis, aviators were staging publicity events involving high rise buildings in cities across the country. Mr. Spitzer saw an excellent marketing opportunity and offered a reward to anyone who would land an airship on the Spitzer Building roof.

On June 30 of 1905, Toledo One, an airship measuring 58 feet long and 15 feet in diameter took off from Toledo’s old Fairgrounds, threaded its way downtown and landed on the roof of the Spitzer Building. Upon arrival, the pilot, Roy Knabenshue, delivered the mail and collected $500 from A.L Spitzer. That’s over $18,000 in 2026 dollars.

History of the Capitol Park Lofts Expansion Project | Part 2

The United Savings Bank Building at 1133 Griswold Street was modernized in the early 1970s with a new, nearly windowless granite front facade. The façade featured red granite at the center, flanked by vertical metal fins. Windows at the middle part of the facade were simple walled off. The office building deteriorated significantly and was vacant by the end of the century.

During the removal of the granite in 2023, the steel supporting grid was uncovered, revealing that all stone projections had been cut off to accommodate the steel and each steel framing member was anchored through the stone to the building frame behind. The original decorative stone cornice had also been removed and replaced by a block parapet.

History of the Capitol Park Lofts Expansion Project | Part 1

1133 Griswold was originally built as a seven-story office building for the United Savings Bank. Completed in 1921, the small building infilled a diamond-shaped lot facing Griswold Street and an alley and is bounded on two sides by 1145 Griswold Street, completed nine years earlier.

Stay tuned for Part 2 to learn more about the building's later evolution, including the loss of its original facade and its path to redevelopment.
