Most students spend a few hours shopping for a prom dress. Layla Hildreth spent five months creating hers — and in doing so, turned a high school milestone into a life-defining moment that captured the hearts of the entire internet and the attention of one of the world's most iconic entertainment companies.
Layla, a senior at Shades Valley High School in Birmingham, Alabama, didn't just want a dress for prom. She wanted a statement — a wearable work of art that reflected something meaningful about who she is and what she loves. Drawing inspiration from Disney's beloved Princess and the Frog, she designed and hand-sewed an extraordinary gown that was not purchased from a store or ordered online. It was built, stitch by careful stitch, over five dedicated months of creativity, patience, and craftsmanship.
When images of Layla and her creation went viral, the response was immediate and overwhelming. People everywhere recognized in her work something genuinely rare — not just talent, but the kind of devoted, disciplined passion that produces results worthy of a standing ovation. Disney recognized it too. The company offered Layla an all-expenses-paid trip to preview the brand-new Tiana's Bayou Adventure ride at Walt Disney World — a full-circle moment so perfect it could have been scripted.
But it wasn't scripted. It was earned. Thread by thread, hour by hour, over five months of showing up for a vision that most people would have abandoned long before completion.
Layla Hildreth's story is a reminder to every young creative person that dedication to your craft has a way of opening doors that no amount of networking or strategy could manufacture. She simply created something beautiful — and the world came to her.

She was once told to try basketball instead of ice hockey, that the rink wasn’t where she “belonged.” But Laila Edwards chose the ice anyway, pushing past stereotypes and limited representation to carve out her own lane. At the 2026 Winter Olympics, she made history as one of the first Black women to compete for Team USA in Olympic women’s hockey, helping lead her team on the world stage. “I just want young girls who look like me to know they can play this game too,” she has shared.

Speed skater Erin Jackson also faced moments of isolation in a sport where few competitors looked like her. After becoming the first Black American woman to win an individual Winter Olympic gold in 2022, she returned in 2026 and made history again as the first Black woman to carry the U.S. flag at a Winter Olympic Opening Ceremony. “I had a little stumble… and then I just finished as strong as I could,” she said, reflecting her resilience.

Bobsled champion Elana Meyers Taylor has long spoken about proving she belongs in elite winter sport while balancing motherhood and competition. In 2026, she added to her historic medal count, further cementing her legacy as one of the most decorated Black athletes in Winter Olympic history.

Now, these women are not the 'only ones'; they are barrier-breakers in the room together as champions. Congratulations, Laila, Erin, and Elana!
