John, the son of an illustrator and an art teacher, grew up in Detroit surrounded by art. He worked for 30 years in national advertising photography before turning to painting. During this time, he founded Midcoast Studios and Spike Osler Photography. He traveled, painted and met extraordinary people, many of whom had modest means and fragile futures. They were free with their friendship, rich in spirit, and revealed to John their joy, pain, and hopes. John captured their time together with the dignity they deserve.

His work is especially admired by fellow artists for its strength and directness. John has won Gold Medals in the prestigious Scarab Club shows and is currently in collections in Detroit, Chicago, New York, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Pasadena, Seattle, Monterey, Minneapolis, New Orleans, throughout the country, Europe and New Zealand.

“From the joyful abandon of boys splashing in the ocean to the confident dignity of an African-American woman sitting in the back row of a church, John Osler exhibits a masterful understanding of color and light and equally important, a magical ability to translate passion, joy, grief, resignation, and dignity to canvas. What I find so remarkable is how Osler reveals his subjects’ innermost thoughts: their turmoil and resignation, their pain and peace.

Artist filled his paintings, photos with emotion and humanity
By: K. Michelle Moran | Grosse Pointe Times | Published March 4, 2025

The late Grosse Pointe Shores artist John Osler spent almost every day painting.

DETROIT/GROSSE POINTE SHORES — The people and places John Osler painted came to life with vibrancy and intuitiveness, and that’s something visitors will see in a new exhibition of work created over the artist’s career.

The exhibition, which comes nearly two years after Osler’s death at the age of 87 on March 27, 2023, will be open to the public from 4 to 8 p.m. March 15, 1 to 5 p.m. March 16 and 1 to 5 p.m. March 22-23 at Design Studio 6 in Detroit. The opening reception is March 15 and there will be a talk by family members and others during the closing, between 2 and 4 p.m. March 23.

“He loved to paint — absolutely loved to paint,” said Phyllis Osler, of Grosse Pointe Shores, to whom John Osler was married for 62 years. She said her late husband painted almost every day, either in his studio or, during the summer, in the backyard of their Grosse Pointe Shores home.

The home the Oslers shared is filled with his artwork, and Phyllis Osler said she wants to see some of it find a cherished home with other art lovers. The purpose of this new exhibition, she said, is “just to get his work out there so people can enjoy it.”

April McGee-Flournoy, the owner of Design Studio 6 - Detroit , said the show will feature more than 50 of Osler’s artworks, mostly oil paintings and a limited number of prints. She’s the daughter of the late Charles McGee, a legendary Detroit artist John Osler admired but didn’t know personally. McGee-Flournoy’s gallery space is housed in the building where her father once had his art studio.

Visitors to the exhibition “will see his regard for humanity and his respect for everyday people,” McGee-Flournoy said.

She met Osler circa 2013 or 2014 at a meeting of the Fine Arts Breakfast Club.

“He was just a pleasant person to sit with and have a conversation with,” McGee-Flournoy said. “(He was) definitely a people person. He cared about having an experience with you...

The composition or combination of parts or elements so as to form a whole

Creative Detroit Togetherness. Unity. Collaboration.

Art and Cultural Sacred Spaces Inspired and developed by our legends and community

“Detroit really has been a heaven for me,” It has given me dignity and treated me with respect.”  Charles McGee

The world is my canvas, I am just one little a spec on that canvas. It's trying to understand the order that holds the world together…when we all work together we understand more, we tolerate more, we live better lives because we are talking about being moved by togetherness. We are able to live together harmoniously. I think art tries to help to understand where we are and achieve order out of our existence….

A Bit of Detroit Art History:

Charles McGee Oil Painting "Squares and Things" African-American 1967

https://www.1stdibs.com/art/paintings/still-life-paintings/charles-mcgee-charles-mcgee-oil-painting-squares-things-african-american-1967/id-a_5465372/

"Squares and Things" painted by the eminent artist, Charles McGee, literally breaths his African American heritage and his extraordinary vibrant use of colors. This early painting of McGee's shows his mastery in creating a painting in the style of the French Impressionist Edouard Manet, "Still Life with Melon and Peaches" located in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, and in the style of Fauvist/Expressionist painter Henry Matisse, "Still Life with Blue Tablecloth", located in the Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg, Russia. McGee makes the well-known genre of still life his own creating an exciting, marvelous work incorporating the homely quilt - the powerful symbol of the African American road to safety from slavery - as his main focus. Quilts symbolize warmth, comfort, and as shown by the collection of quilts gathered by the artists in Gee's Bend the designs on the quilts hung outdoors at locations along the Underground Railroad showed fugitives the road north and to safety.

"Squares and Things" was first shown at The Arwin Galleries, Inc., Detroit, Michigan, one of the stops along the Underground Railroad. This piece is an extraordinary example of his early work before he moved into Abstract Expressionism and his many sculptural works now located throughout Michigan.

McGee was born into a family of sharecroppers. While helping his grandfather tend the land, "he observed firsthand the order and harmony that exists within nature."

"ART CHARTS THE COURSE OF TIME. IT PROCESSES AND APPLIES SIGNATURE TO THE UNIQUENESS OF HUMAN THOUGHTS AND PERCEPTIONS. IT ASKS FOR TOLERANCE, PLEADS AND BEGS FREEDOM AND PEACE, IT SEEKS A BETTER WORLD BY TRYING TO UNDERSTAND EVEN THE MINUTEST PARTICLE OF THE VAST INTELLIGENCE MANIFESTED IN NATURE'S ORDER. THE CREATIVE MIND CONTINUES ALWAYS TO TEST THE PARAMETERS OF CONVENTIONAL KNOWLEDGE, FOREVER IN PURSUIT OF NEW VISTAS.

TRYING TO UNDERSTAND LIFE, DEATH, THE TOTALITY OF EXISTENCE, AND THE LOGIC OR ORDER THAT GOVERNS OUR BEING IS THE FORM FROM WHICH ART EXTRACTS ITS MEANING. THE BELIEF THAT ALL MATTER EXISTS AND OPERATES IN THE SERVICE OF NATURE IS THE BASIC TENET SHAPING THE CONTENT OF MY IMAGERY. THE STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS OF LINES, SHAPES, COLOR, VALUE, TEXTURE, AND CONTENT ARE EMPLOYED AS ECHOS OF HUMANKINDS MOTIONS IN A TIME/SPACE EQUATION.

I PERCIEVE MY WORK AS CONTENT MESSAGE BEARERS WHOSE LANGUAGE IS FORMED THROUGH THE UNIQUE PHYSIOLOGICAL EMPLOYMENT OF THESE MEANS. PAST AND CURRENT INVOLVEMENT WITH PUBLIC ART HAVE SHIFTED THE FOCUS OF MY WORK DRASTICALLY TO THE CUSP WHERE SPACE, AESTHETICS, AND UTILITY MERGE INTO A CONSUMMATE ENERGY. SYSTEMS OF OPPOSITES OPERATE IN JUXTAPOSITION AS OPTICAL ENERGIZERS WHERE THESE FORCES ACT IN HARMONY AS DYNAMIC CONSTRUCTS OF CONCEPTUAL ENVIRONMENTS."

Charles McGee’s career spanned 7 decades. He remained true to practice informed by ‘the energy of life’: interdependence, equality, and connection among all living things. These ideas were the driving force in his life as he moved across artistic styles and media with curiosity over his lifetime. Through his work, McGee encouraged peace, balance, and harmony, with the desire to make the world a better place to live.
In 1958, he and 14 other Black artists created Contemporary Studio, the second Black-operated visual art institution in Detroit. The Studio was at the forefront of what became Detroit’s Black cultural revolution during the 1960s energized by the Civil Rights Movement.
“The art world out there entered Detroit through Charles McGee.” – McArthur Binion

In 1969 he curated an exhibition of Black art entitled Seven Black Artists, featuring works by himself, Lester Johnson, Henri Umbaji King, Robert Murray, James Lee, Allie McGhee, Harold Neal, and Robert J. Stull. McGee stated that “quality was the only criterion for inclusion,” and the show received rave reviews. Inspired by the response, he opened Gallery 7 at 8232 West McNichols, representing many of the artists in the exhibition in addition to other nationally recognized names. In conjunction with Gallery 7, he founded the Charles McGee School of Art. The gallery’s artists volunteered their time teaching classes to all ages, with a focus on bringing art to Detroit’s young Black community. According to McGee, “Our idea was to educate hand, mind, and eye rather than giving the kids busy work to keep them off the streets. It was an art school, not an experiment in sociology.” In 1974, McGee organized a prison art program, in which artists from Gallery 7 taught classes at the Wayne County Jail.
