My Detroit Summers
Favorite summer activities growing up on Prairie in the Fitzgerald neighborhood were sitting on the Johnson’s porch across the street, talking to, walking and shopping with my mother on 6 mile, helping my mother with gardening, going to Belle Isle with my sister and her children, living with and hanging out with my cousins in the University District, playing tennis with my father at Marygrove, participating in the University of Detroit summer youth program, riding my bike with a friend throughout various neighborhoods, making my friends create and sell artwork to residents on Northlawn street near Gallery 7
Cultural Connection Through Travel
When I travel, I make it a priority to visit historically Black sites, museums, and monuments. These experiences deepen my connection to Black culture, history, and community.
Early Creative Influences
Until mid-adulthood, one of my favorite pastimes was reading magazines such as Right On!, Black Enterprise, Architectural Digest, and Interior Design. These publications reflected my interests in culture, business, design, and creative expression.
Research, Heritage, and Creative Study
As a mature adult, I enjoy legacy building, preservation and researching genealogy, African and Black creatives, and Black history. I also collect books on Black history, art, and design, which continue to deepen my understanding of culture, legacy, and creative expression.
Returning to Artmaking
I look forward to creating art again and reconnecting with that part of my creative practice.
