Sock yarns can be so magic. Not only does this one stripe, but the stripes create their own ombre effect. Fabulous in a variety of projects from socks to shawls, to baby sweater, to hats. I also love a self striping yarn in granny squares.

Urth's Uneek Fi*****ng is a fi*****ng weight 100% superwash merino. Each 100-gram skein has 435 yards. Machine washable. $29

The Butterfly - Papillion Shawl is one of the most popular projects with this yarn. The long transition of colors look so cool. We also are stocking the Harvest Fi*****ng ($29) to use as the solid background color. 2+1 skeins.

Tanis Lavallee's Trusty Toe-Up Sock recipe is a great blank slate for the self-striping yarn. One skein makes a pair.

The Sockhead Slouch is a slouchy, comfy hat, perfect project for that one skein of sock yarn that is way too special to put on your feet. Fair warning: there is miles of stockinette stitch, so this makes for great TV, travel or zen knitting.

The super soft quality Baby Cozy Organic Cotton Cashmere is a baby yarn made of organic cotton with cashmere content. It is made of 100% natural fibres and, thanks to the cashmere fibres, is cuddly soft and still machine washable in the delicate cycle.

Rico's Baby Cozy is a sport-weight blend of 90% cotton/10% cashmere. Each 50g skein has 159 yards. Machine washable. $13.60

There is fabulous pattern support for both knitters and crocheters in the Rico Baby Booklet. From hats to rompers to blankets, it has it all for $15. This yarn is perfect for babies, easy care and soft! Rico has a free cardigan pattern on their website that uses 3-4 balls.

The Riptide Tee is an elegant semi-cropped summer tee. The soft rounded V-neck merges at a perfect depth and flows into the body to carry the riptide stitch pattern via a central panel to the hem, where the tee is finished with a simple garter and eyelet stitch.

Summertide is worked seamlessly from the top down. The upper part of the yoke uses a beautiful combination of increases that highlights the shoulders.

The tweed effect of Super Soxx Tweed 6-ply adds visual interest as you knit and gives the finished socks a rustic look, without the rustic feel. The 6-ply sock yarns combine South American Corriedale fibers with nylon for added durability. Thicker than classic 4-ply sock yarn, they knit up more quickly and are ideal for warm, long-lasting favorite socks.

Lang's Super Soxx 6-ply Tweed is a sport weight blend of 67% wool/25% nylon/8% viscose. Each 150-gram skein has 455 yards. Machine washable. $34

The Caramel Sauce socks are designed for sport weight yarn, so even though the stitch counts are not very big, the size of the socks accomplished is medium to large.

I love the instep detail of the Spare Rib Socks. Mostly a garter rib cuff with a simple little cable and some lovely shaping.

A good basic sock, for both men and women would be the Holme Socks. They incorporate a short row heel.

All of these patterns would require only one ball.

It's time for Afghan August! This is our third annual! I wasn't sure how it would be received when we first came up with the idea. Hot. Humid. Afghans?!?!?! So to celebrate this insanity, I'm extending some fun offers so you, too, can have an Afghan August!

So here's the deal. Purchase any afghan quantity of yarn (10 or more skeins in same yarn, not necessarily the same color) and get 20% off! This can be in stock, special order, or drop ship. Starting today through the whole month of August. Cannot be combined with other discounts.

A few years back, a customer made a blanket with all of her late mother's leftover stash. She stranded yarns together to achieve similar gauges and the result was stunning. It reminds me of the firs photo above, Garter Squish by Stephen West. Stranding yarns together makes it go faster and creates beautiful color shifts.

One of my most favorite blankets that I made myself was Umaro by Jared Flood. I did it in a super bulky, but in the years between the pattern has been extended to include three weights of yarn.

Can't decide what stitch to do? Try a sampler like the Porto Blanket. I think it would be great in Ultra Wool DK, easy care machine washable wool.

Temperature blankets are done both in knitting and crochet. Your work a different color, based on the temperature, for a whole year. A great way to commemorate a baby's first year, a new marriage, or any other special occasion. I like this take on it with crocheted granny squares; Daily Granny Temperature Blanket.

These are just my ideas, but the deal is good for any afghan quantity!

The pattern support for these yarns is great, including the Puppies Book. Not just puppies, but cute animals of all types. Each book $14.

Kits are $28 each and include all the yarn needed plus the pattern, crochet hook, and button eyes.

We are thrilled to be participating in the 11th annual Great Northern Yarn Haul! This year the tour of yarn shops through New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont will be the entire month of July. How it works: grab a passport from your local yarn shop (hope it's us!) Travel around to see some great shops and get your passport stamped. Turn in your passport at the end to be entered into prize drawings. Great fun!

Alp Natural is the all natural member of the collection. It loves the spring. It offers earthy tones and texture. Unlike other members of the collection, Alp Natural is hand dyed after being hand tied. It shifts textures, from smooth and tightly plied to textured and lacey.

Feza Yarn's Alp Natural is a worsted-weight blend of 40% cotton/10% silk/30% viscose/20% linen. Each 100-gram skein has 230 yards. Machine washable. $20

Springswell is an easy-wearing, lightweight v-neck tee. The straightforward design means it is an easy, relaxed project that will showcase the changing texture of the cotton blend Alp Natural yarn.
