This sizable built-in fireplace wall went from feeling flat to becoming the rightful focal point of the room✨

The biggest transformation? That gorgeous wallpaper from Mitchell Black | Custom Designer Wallpaper | Made in USA. Made-to-order, sustainably produced, and from a women-owned company based in Chicago, it adds just the right amount of pattern pop without overwhelming the space.

From there, we layered in a graphic gallery wall, created a dedicated spot for the turntable, styled the mantel with meaningful objects - including a handsome vintage clock from family, and freed up space in the built-ins for books and future collections.

I’m here to tell you that wallcoverings can make a world of difference in the quest to make a room feel distinctive and directly reflectrive of your personality!🏡

“Help, I have too much art.” 🖼️
I’ll be honest… that’s not a request I hear very often.

Most homes I walk into could use ✨more✨ art to add personality and warmth. But this client? She’s a self-proclaimed artaholic with an incredible collection.

The goal isn’t to get rid of anything—it’s to thoughtfully arrange each piece so every room feels intentional and every artwork gets its moment.

That’s one of my favorite parts of what I do. No two homes need the same solution, which means no two design projects look alike.

Before ➡️ After
Life transitions can free up unused space that you can use as a money maker.

When the client’s youngest daughter transferred to a college on the east coast, it was time to transform the basement into a mid-term rental that could help offset costs. It already had a separate entrance and a great floorplan fearuing a large living area, bedroom with daylight windows, wet bar and roomy hallway.

We used existing furniture like the handsome sofas, classic bedframe, leaning floor mirror and modern coatrack, along with a few of the client’s fun framed prints. Then we remixed and rearranged, bringing in cozy area rugs, proportional tables, faux greenery and vivid pops of color to keep things cheerful in a low-light space.

A walk-in storage pantry became a kitchenette with 3/4 fridge, coffee bar☕️ and plenty of dish storage. We even refreshed the top of a scuffed white desk with a botanical wallpaper to create an inviting work station.

A few favorite details:

✨ Custom Etsy window treatments that completely changed the feel of the living area
✨ Glowing jade bedside lamps from Home Goods

Reynold has always operated under the assumption that he is the only cat in the Knotty Pine Design orbit with real creative influence🐱

His sister Violet hangs back from the limelight so that assumption is largely unchallenged… but I do have to report on a rising feline talent I got to spend some quality time with while working on a client’s new home.

Introducing Susie: Soft lighting, impeccable presence, absolutely no effort required—just the softest fur and natural star power in the middle of a beautiful home glow-up.

Reynold remains at headquarters, fully secure in his position as resident muse and creative director. No changes to leadership have been made.

And honestly, I’m just loving getting to meet all of my clients’ precocious pets along the way.

One of my favorite parts of a room refresh? Shopping the house first. 👀

This dresser in my client’s son’s room was packed with treasures that had slowly collected and been forgotten over time. A little chaotic? Maybe. Full of potential? Absolutely.

I extracted a few pieces for styling elsewhere—a bowling pin, a V***e Cliquot tin, a fez hat, and all those quirky little finds that make a home feel personal.

Try as I might, I never found a spot for the bowling pin, but the promo tin and fez sure came in handy! The rest is a mix of Knotty Pine Design finds plus books and bits plucked from elsewhere in the home. What do you think, did we score a strike or a spare? ✨🎳
