Want to know if your chimney needs repointing? You do not need a contractor for the first check. Grab a flat-head screwdriver. Press the tip into a mortar joint on the chimney. If the mortar crumbles, or you can push the screwdriver in more than about a quarter inch with moderate pressure, the mortar has deteriorated and repointing is on the table. A few other tells: white staining on the brick (efflorescence), gaps between brick and mortar, or sand and mortar crumbs collecting at the base of the chimney. The earlier you catch it, the cheaper the repair. Our new article walks through every warning sign to look for.

Homeowners use the words interchangeably. So do some contractors. But tuckpointing and repointing are actually two different masonry techniques, and the difference matters when you are paying for the work. Repointing is the structural repair: grinding out failed mortar and packing new mortar into the joints. Tuckpointing is an older decorative technique using two colors of mortar to mimic finely jointed brickwork. Years ago, a customer was told by another company that he needed a $13,000 chimney liner to continue using his fireplace safely. Wanting a second opinion, he scheduled an annual cleaning and inspection with our team.
