For Jim Mull of Lindsay tint, It wasn’t just about owning his own business or being his own boss, nor was it just for the love of tint, though, that became a factor. For Jim Mull, owner of Lindsay Tint LLC in Powell, Ohio, beginning his career in the window film industry was a means to make extra money during his time off from his 12-hour shifts as a registered nurse (RN) in the emergency room (ER). So, how does someone go from being an RN for 14 years to becoming a full-time architectural film installer? It’s an unlikely turn of events, but for Mull, it all started with a wall full of windows and a simple question.
It was 2004 when Mull and his wife purchased their first home, and, while looking around the room at their latest investment, he realized there was a large amount of heat emanating from the many windows. Reflecting on the mem- ory, Mull recalls saying to himself, “There’s got to be something that can help with that by now.” And, as we all know, he was right.
He wasn’t unfamiliar with window film, though—he had tinted cars while on college breaks in the early ’90s for a local detail shop, but that had been one of the last times he had his hands on film. After some research, he decided to try his luck at installing on his own home, and after getting requests from friends, he knew he was on to something. From there, Lindsay Tint was born, aptly named after his daughter, who was eight at the time. “I asked her what she thought I should call my business, and she said ‘Lindsay Tint,’” Mull recalls. “I thought, ‘Well, it worked for Wendy’s, so why not give it a try?’” Mull decided to focus only on commercial and residential installations, but, like many start- up companies, he found himself struggling to build a customer base. “The hardest part was finding business,” he explains. “I didn’t know anything about it other than customer service and customer care—and that was just from what I knew as a nurse. I was trying to find commercial business by guerilla marketing with little to no budget. But, I kept with it, and eventually it became more than a hobby—more than a side thing.”
As business began to grow, Mull knew he had to give up on one of his careers. “It came down to me having to make a decision. I was getting really busy, getting more commercial jobs, and it was interfering with my family time,” he explains. “So, I quit nursing and focused on the business full-time, and it just took off from there.”
