Jeff Widness founded HMI as Home Menders, Inc. in Minnesota in 1973. HMI established early on a solid foundation for high-quality work.

By 1975, HMI had grown into a heavy construction company, adding complicated multi-structural concrete projects, along with airport construction and navigation systems, to its expertise. From airport lighting systems, localizers, and military contracted arrestors to city-contracted construction such as retaining walls, schools and beyond, HMI now offers its over 50 years of construction management

to clients all over the United States for airports, cities, and private business enterprises. With a dedicated team of construction specialists and contract managers, HMI has consistently pursued and delivered excellence through unparalleled safety, the highest quality workmanship, and a consistent attitude of working easily with client requests, schedules, and services.

Starting the 2026 season strong with substation work already in progress. Here’s a look at some recent work our crew has completed for Minnesota Power an ALLETE Company and Siemens Energy while working alongside National Conductor Inc., Rachel Contracting, and Tri-State Drilling, LLC.

This project has so far included concrete foundations, chiller pad work, and transformer pads. We’re grateful for the opportunity to be part of these projects and proud of the work our team continues to deliver. Looking forward to a busy year ahead.

📍 Silver Bay, MN

Exciting progress is underway in Silver Bay as construction begins on the new Multi-Modal Trailhead Center — a facility set to replace the aging recreation building.

This new center will offer public meeting space, rest facilities, expanded parking for vehicles of all sizes, and direct access to both motorized and non-motorized trails in the area.

Our team has completed the footings and walls as the building footprint takes shape. Moving forward, we’ll be pouring the slabs, sidewalks, and completing other key civil concrete work.

We’re proud to be part of a project that will bring lasting value to the Silver Bay community!

The Blatnik Bridge connecting Duluth, MN to Superior, WI will be undergoing a replacement project beginning in 2027, which leaves many Superior businesses with the task of relocating. One of these businesses is Allstate Peterbilt, which is in the process of building their new facility. We have already completed the footings and foundation walls on this project, and will continue to work on the building slab and aprons in upcoming weeks.

Spirit Mountain in Duluth is getting a new chairlift installed in order to continue having a functional and well maintained recreational area for their winter activities. This new chairlift will replace two of the older and harder to maintain chairlifts that the recreation area currently has.

We began our portion of the project this week, which includes pouring foundation pads and columns for the 6 towers on the lift, as well as pouring foundations for the operator shacks and drive and return pads on the top and bottom of the slope.
