CALLING LOCAL ARTISTS + MAKERS!

I’m planning something special again at Deborah Ferrer Design Studio 📍Dunkirk, NY for Small Business Saturday: a one-day Pop-Up Gift Shop filled with locally made, thoughtfully curated goods.

And I’d love to feature you!

I’m currently looking for local artists, makers and creatives whose work would make a wonderful addition to the popup gift shop: artwork, pottery, textiles, jewelry, candles, paper goods, ornaments, small home accessories, specialty gifts and other beautiful or interesting things.

A little clarification on how this pop-up will work:
This will not be a traditional vendor event with individual tables or booths. Instead, I’ll be transforming the studio into a one-day gift shop and merchandising everything together as a curated collection.

I’m looking for makers interested in providing inventory that I can retail in the popup shop. Depending on the artist and product, we can arrange for me to purchase inventory outright or work on a sale-or-return basis, with unsold merchandise returned after the event.

My hope is to create a really fun shopping experience that celebrates local creativity + local small businesses while giving shoppers a chance to discover things they might not find anywhere else.

When your hobbies and your career collide. And suddenly thrifting is considered work.

I’ve been collecting pieces for an upcoming event and apparently this assignment was made for me.

This is exactly what I love about design: not everything has to be new, expensive or perfectly matched to be beautiful. Sometimes the most interesting spaces come together one found piece at a time.

Consider this my official justification for every thrift store stop between now and the event.

There is room for all of us.

One of the things I love most about this industry is that no two designers are exactly alike. We each have our own eye, our own approach, our own strengths, our own specialty and ultimately, our own client.

Another designer’s success doesn’t take anything away from mine. And mine doesn’t take anything away from theirs.

In fact, I think we’re better when we support one another. Share a resource. Answer a question. Make an introduction. Celebrate the beautiful project someone else created. Recommend another designer when you know they’re a better fit for a particular client.

I don’t need to be the designer for everyone. I just need to be the right designer for my clients.

There’s plenty of creativity, plenty of work, and plenty of room at the table.

Designers who support other designers are the ones who really get it.

Why AI is not always a helpful tool.

I was working on a small cabinet project for a new client in their mudroom. My design software is primarily used for space planning and doesn’t have all the options I prefer to style a space. So I thought let’s lean into technology to see how they can help.

I asked AI to style the rendering. I gave them the lowdown of the family. How many kids. How many pets. What their style was. And what their hobbies where.

The first two options AI completely reconfigured the cabinetry. I replied that I didn’t want any changes to the cabinetry and I was just looking for the tool to add decorative elements to style the space.

The third option kept the cabinetry relatively the same, but the section I had designed a bench that was just only 21” wide by 21” deep… AI decides to add a dog wash station.

In what world is a dog wash station going to fit there.

And not only was there a dog wash station, it showed what appears to be 10-12” of bench space left over past the dog wash.

My response back is obviously full on annoyance. Here I thought it would add charming artwork and details and instead decided to redesign my layout with things that are impossible to fit.

This is exactly why hiring a designer is worth the investment. Interior Designers aren’t color picker outers. We are educated and trained to space plan. We understand the restraints of what is required and where things will fit and even more importantly - where things will not fit.

If you’re relying on AI to show you what your remodel will look like, chances are there will be many elements that are impossible to do. I’ve had to break the news to more than one client that without moving doors, windows and staircases that the renderings AI shows them will not work.

Yesterday afternoon I received a visitor at the Studio. A volunteer from Revitalize Dunkirk. He came to speak with me about an idea he had that I had mentioned to the group a few years ago. We spent the next hour talking about Dunkirk and downtown specifically and how we can help each other with our mission to bring life back to the community.

Before leaving, he told me he wanted to plant some additional hosta in my garden and refresh my mulch as a gift from him. Today when I arrived, the work had been completed.

Being a small business, I’m no stranger to being asked to donate and help the community. This was the first time someone helped me. I’ve already weeded that garden twice this season, added the landscape fence and installed the no littering signs. I’m outside daily picking up trash, sweeping, and pulling weeds from the sidewalk cracks.

I had a dental procedure this morning and let’s face it, my entire face is numb, my speech is slurred, and when I try to talk I drool and I feel like I’m going to swallow my tongue.

Thank you for understanding.
I’m sure my husband will be glad for the break in my chattiness. Talking is my favorite. 🗣️
