Expect the unexpected

In a bit of irony, this morning I was looking through old notes I've written and ran across this one:

> I am old enough that I grew up with a physical card catalogue in the library. I used physical card catalogues, paper encyclopedia sets, and hardbound dictionaries. I have wandered the shelves of bookstores and libraries, discovering unexpected treasures along the way. Things that were just exactly what I was looking for, even though I didn't know it at the time.

Serendipity is amazing.

And here I was, finding something I wasn't looking for in a note about finding things I wasn't looking for. Apparently, I haven't changed much.

I wonder how much we miss when we know exactly what we're looking for. Searching is wonderful when you have something specific in mind, but there's something to be said for wandering around without much of a plan, whether it's through a bookstore, a collection of old notes, a gallery, or the aisles of an art supply store. Sometimes the interesting thing is the one you hadn't thought to look for.

The same thing happens when we're making art. We start out with one idea, but something unexpected happens along the way (at least it does for me). A color looks different than we thought it would, a mark goes somewhere we didn't intend, or one idea leads to another. Sometimes the best thing we can do is pay attention and see where it takes us.

So here's to occasionally wandering off course, getting a little distracted, and finding something we didn't know we were looking for. Who knows where you'll find a spark of inspiration, and the world needs your art!

We revamped the craft paints recently - back to a favorite brand (DecoART) with lots of colors, metallics, glitter, and FABRIC PAINT! That last one is a pretty common request, so we're happy to finally have it (and not just a medium you can mix in to your existing acrylics). Paint some wood, decorate a flowerpot, add an unreasonable amount of glitter to something, paint a tote bag... you get the idea. There are a whole bunch of new options to play with.

We Contain Multitudes

I draw and paint. I husband and parent. I sculpt things in 3D, work with wood, ride motorcycles, camp, backpack, fix things, break things, get interested in random stuff for a while and then probably get interested in something else, and there are definitely a bunch of things I’m forgetting.

And for some reason we tend to talk about ourselves like we’re supposed to pick one. Artist. Parent. Business owner. Motorcycle guy. Whatever fits nicely on the little label and makes it easier for somebody else to understand what box to put us in.

But I don’t think any of those things actually stay in their own lane, at least mine sure don’t.

The places I’ve been, things I’ve built, problems I’ve tried to solve, miles I’ve ridden, time I’ve spent outside, being a husband and a parent and all the weird little things that come along with that, it all finds its way into the things I make somehow. And apparently into these emails too.

Maybe being an artist isn’t really one separate part of a person at all, maybe it’s just one of the ways all the other parts come spilling back out. You notice something while camping, learn a little patience from woodworking, get interested in a shape while fixing a motorcycle, hear your kid say something completely strange and brilliant, and then six months later some tiny piece of it shows up in a drawing and you probably don’t even know where it came from.

We contain multitudes. At least one of yours is an artist. Give that one some room too, because the world needs your art!

When art seemed easier

Sometimes I think making art used to be easier. Maybe when we were younger we didn't think so much about whether something was going to be good. We just drew, painted, made stuff, got frustrated with it, and probably threw a lot of it away.

But I also wonder how much of that is just memory doing some editing for us. We remember the things that worked and the times we got completely lost in making something. We're not quite as good at remembering all the lousy drawings, unfinished projects, and ideas that didn't go anywhere.

It's easy to compare what we're struggling with today to some earlier time when everything seemed to come more naturally. But that's comparing what's actually happening right now, including all the mistakes and uncertainty, with a version of the past that's had years to get cleaned up.

Maybe someday we'll remember what we're making right now the same way. Which seems like a pretty good reason not to worry too much about whether today's drawing is one of the good ones. Just make it and let time decide what you remember. The world needs your art!
