Kids rooms are where I get really particular. Because they’re sleeping in there eight, ten, sometimes twelve hours a night. Breathing in there. It’s not the place to cut corners.

The mattress is the first thing I talk about with clients. Most conventional mattresses are full of flame retardants and off gassing foam that you absolutely do not want a child sleeping on for years. I look for GOTS certified organic latex or innerspring with no chemical treatments. It costs more. It’s worth it.

Bedding is the same conversation. Organic cotton or linen only – and wash everything before it goes on the bed. Even the “clean” stuff has finishes from manufacturing that need to come out.

Then the room itself. I keep kids spaces intentionally quiet - soft neutrals, one or two grounding colors, nothing that competes. Their days are loud and stimulating enough. The room should feel like a exhale the second they walk in.

Blackout shades, always. A quality one makes a real difference in how well they actually sleep.

Some spaces tell you exactly who you are before you even know it yourself. Vintage pieces have always found their way into our homes – not because they were perfect, but because they had a story already written into them. That’s exactly why the exists: to make those finds accessible, not accidental.

This month’s Substack is my May favorites – a roundup of the vintage pieces we keep coming back to. The ones that make a room feel lived in, layered, and a little bit collected over time.

Since I get asked a lot, here’s a little about me.

I went full time with Lawless at the end of 2018 and haven’t looked back. Before that it was a side hustle, a dream, a lot of late nights. Making it official was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, and this community is a big reason why.

New England born and raised, which probably explains my love of the outdoors, the seasons, and anything vintage. When I’m not working, we are outdoors either hiking or gardening. I’m a mom, a wife, and a dog mom to our rescue pup Kona, who you’ve probably already met if you’ve stopped by the shoppe. Wellness and staying active are a big part of my life outside of work, and honestly they fuel everything I bring to Lawless.

Glad you’re here 🤎

There is something about a home that has aged well. The kind where the garden has been tended for years, where the kitchen smells like something real, and where every room holds a little more history than the last. These are the spaces that stop us in our tracks. Not because they are perfect, but because they are lived in, layered, and deeply themselves. This is the kind of living that quietly inspires everything we do at Lawless Design.

A little before and after of our project we worked on a couple of years ago. We paired limestone floors with a marble slab shower to elevate this room.
