We grew up together... Now he runs the job sites I design. 😊

I don't think either of us saw that coming from this beach in the 90s, me digging to the center of the earth, Bryan already standing over the job site he didn't know he'd be running.

These days I'm the designer, and he's the contractor, which means we're two halves of the same project: I dream it up, and he makes sure it actually gets built. That's a kind of trust you can't manufacture, the kind that comes from knowing someone long before either of you had a business card.

Same sand. Different tools. Frame to Finish, thanks for still overseeing my grand ideas!

Every now & then it's good to reintroduce yourself.

Hi, I'm so glad you found me! If you've been around a while, humor me while I wave to the new faces. 👋

You already know the designer part. Swipe through for the rest of me, because you can't design homes that feel like other people without being a whole, real person yourself. The bird nerd, the museum lurker, the adventurer. It all shows up in the work...the martini shows up after.

Your turn! Tell me one thing about your off-the-clock self in the comments. 🍸

Just popping on to say that I appreciate all of the love and support you've all shown the Granger Project so far! It is not just another pretty house, but three years of real labor and love to save a home deserving of another 80 years.

I have more to say, so in case you've missed it, be sure to join my newsletter/blog, Under the Ginkgo.

I post on Tuesdays, and you'll get the latest right in your inbox. Right now I'm telling the full Granger Project story, and there is plenty more to come from projects past, present, and future. Get the deep dive on the thinking behind a room, the decisions that almost went another way, and the details that make a home feel like the people living in it.

Our neighbors had spent their entire lives in the old white Colonial next door that their grandfather built in 1942. One afternoon, they asked us if we would buy it.

We had never been inside, but after one visit, we said yes.

The full story- what we saw on that one walk-through, and what made us say yes so fast - is the first post on Under the Ginkgo, my new blog on The Granger Project and the design work behind it.

We pulled the vinyl siding off with no promises about what was underneath. All I had were the original blueprints that had a handwritten note stating to estimate the cost in wood siding instead of brick (the original intended material.) It had been covered for years and could have been anything, but the cedar was solid. It was just due a good scraping and fresh coat of paint.

The 84-year-old hardwood floors were the biggest gamble. Decades of life in this home had been lived. You just don’t know how that’s going to go until it does. We wove new wood through the kitchen and the new addition to keep the run going, held our breath... and they came out absolutely stunning!

We saved every solid wood door and every bit of original trim we could, even repurposing doors in different spots when openings changed. New trim was matched as closely as possible. Most of the original plaster walls are still standing.

The addition gave this home something it was missing: a main floor bedroom and full bath, designed to work for someone well into their golden years. And the rooms! I love rooms! I never wanted this house to be open concept.

Outside was a complete restart. New roof, gutters, a new front porch, landscaping-what a list! But the this house and all that character? It was always there.

Cheers to this lovely home, past and present! 🥂

When we first cleaned out this house, the original bones told a story.

Blue countertops. Blue and white check linoleum floors. Blue upstairs bathroom. Blue floral wallpaper in the dining room. Someone loved blue, and it felt intentional, like choices made together by the original owners and their architect way back in 1942.

I didn’t want to erase that. The geometric tile in the kitchen backsplash and the diamond tile in the hallway are a direct nod to those original checkerboard floors. Blue became my muse.

During that same cleanout, I found two washstands left behind in the dining room. I knew right away I wanted to keep them (because I love all the old things), but what would they be used for? I stored the best one in the garage and kept dreaming and designing what this house would become. When I found space for a half bath, I felt it the moment I drew it: the washstand will live here!

The problem was the condition. One door needed significant wood repair, and the marble top was badly stained. It was a cross-your-fingers situation, so I had to wait and see if it could be saved.

And now… It looks better than it probably ever has!

That little powder room might be my favorite thing I’ve ever designed. Something left behind is now something new.

Cheers 🥂 to the past three years and The Granger Project!

More interiors and the exterior will post over the next several days, so stick around.
