Dutifully acting as two vital roles in container planting, Supertunia Mini Vista® Plum Veined Petunia is both “filler” AND “spiller” - bringing months of vibrant color to planters, hanging baskets, window boxes, and garden beds! With a mounded, slightly trailing growing habit, it forms a lush, tidy display full of eye-catching blooms — its fuchsia-pink petals accented by rich plum-colored veining which creates a unique two-toned effect. Blooming continuously from spring until frost, this easy-care petunia thrives in full sun and summer heat. While it’s helpful to trim back when it becomes leggy, deadheading is not necessary to keep the flowers coming. Plus, butterflies and hummingbirds are frequent visitors! Plum Veined delivers deep color and tested performance wherever you plant it, whether in ground lining pathways and beds or within containers.

*Almost all annuals need regular feedings (fertilizer applications) to perform and look their best, but petunias especially so - we recommend mixing a slow release fertilizer (like Bio-tone Starter food or PW continuous release plant food) into the soil at the time of planting and then in a month or two, begin a weekly feeding of fertilizer (like Organic Plant Magic or PW premium water-soluble plant food) mixed into your watering can once a week!

Planting for pollinators? Add some Penstemon digitalis (aka Foxglove Beardtongue) to your gardens! A Northeast native, it produces spikes of white tubular flowers in late spring/early summer that attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds - and serves as a host plant for certain moth species. Adaptable and easy to grow, Penstemon digitalis thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers average to dry, well-draining soils. It’s relatively drought tolerant and deer-resistant, making it a reliable choice for low-maintenance landscapes. It adds vertical interest to perennial gardens (growing up to 5 feet tall!) and blends beautifully with other North American native favorites like coneflower and butterfly w**d. Beardtongue may not sound pretty, but it’s a hardworking perennial that offers native plant benefits, pollinator magnet appeal and easy care for us. Find Penstemon digitalis in our native perennial display area, or take a look at some beautiful cultivars we also have here, like Rock Candy Blue and Dakota Burgondy!

Our annual of the week is all about celebrating this queen of elegant, towering green: she’s Graceful Grasses® Queen Tut™ - Dwarf Papyrus and she reigns over the annual realm with the grace, class, and grass appearance that is her namesake. More delicate in appearance and size than peers King & Prince Tut, Queen Tut Papyrus is a wonderful “thriller” in mixed annual containers and hanging baskets because its spiked foliage flushes out and weaves through other “fillers and spillers“ - blending beautifully to add height and visual interest with fluffy pops of leaves at the tip of each stem that resemble starbursts or fireworks! Spreading up to 18” and reaching a height up to 2 feet when planted in ground, Queen Tut adds flow and uniqueness to garden spaces receiving full to part sun. Like all Papyrus, Queen Tut can be planted in water gardens and other areas that are consistently moist such as along ponds edges where they’ll thrive as an ornamental grass. Because they prefer moist soil - and the smaller the container, the quicker soil dries out - ensuring they’re receiving adequate water is important for maintaining Queen Tut’s lush green foliage.

Unassuming now given their size - but look closer at the tag and prepare to be amazed when you plant Hibiscus Moscheutos aka Swamp Rose Mallow aka hardy hibiscus in your gardens! Native to Rhode Island marshes, streams, and moist meadow/forested areas, these hardy hibiscus thrive in wet areas in the yard such as rain gardens or adjacent to ponds and are still able to adapt to challenging soil conditions such as high acidity or heavy, clay based consistency. They are late to emerge in the winter/spring but to see them flowering is very much worth the wait. Give them room to grow, because one plant reaches up to 5ft tall and wide! Then, in late summer when they start to bloom, massive 6-10” wide pink, rose, and white “dinnerplate” flowers cover the plant. Since they are native to the northeast, they add a huge burst of color and interest to your garden (while making wherever they’re planted embody a tropical paradise) with all of the benefits that come with that - easy to care for and beneficial to the wildlife that enjoys them! We adore them, pollinators adore them, and Rhode Island soil adores them!
